Ask questions about Northeastern here!

Do you know anything about Greek life and how much it costs to join a sorority?

@novafan1225 Thanks!

I really don’t think 8 am classes are that big of a deal. Maybe that’s just me. Don’t stay up until 3 am the night before or whatever and you’ll be fine. And remember it’s only for 4 months of your life. That’s not that long. But if you do have an early class, do NOT let yourself get in the habit of skipping classes. Especially your first semester, don’t start skipping classes because it’s an early class or because the beginning material seems easy. Chances are you’ll regret it. I recently realized that in my 5 years at Northeastern, I’ve never actually skipped a class. I’ve missed some for valid reasons, but never skipped. And I don’t regret it.

Sorry, rant over. :stuck_out_tongue:

Do you think it would be possible to appeal for a merit aid scholarship? Im international student so will be paying full tuition, and a little bit would definitely help.

Would it be possible to email them and request for scholarship with a (non official) binding agreement that I will immediately accept them?

@thepredestrian it would in theory be possible to e-mail them, but I can tell you with 100% certainty that it won’t happen. NU is very calculated in who they offer merit to, and in what amounts. Every single person who has asked (and trust me, a lot of people are asking for more merit money) has gotten the same result: no, we put out best offer forward, merit is offered to top 25%. They definitely wouldn’t accept a non-official binding agreement, either.

@novafan1225

Thanks. Would you happen to know if students can get scholarships from 2nd year onwards if they do well in freshman?

@thepredestrian no. It’s possible to appeal your financial aid after freshman year, but it would only work if you had a significant change in circumstances. There are small “of the month” scholarships available as well, but not guaranteed and typically very specific (children of BPD officers, people of Lithuanian descent, females involved in theatre from Wisconsin…you get the idea).

Even if it were, I do NOT recommend coming to an unaffordable school on the assumption that you will get a scholarship at a later date. I know quite a few people who have come to college with the idea in their head that they’ll be an RA to save money, but then if/when they don’t get it (and it’s always competitive), they can become super bitter.

So my son was accepted to Northeastern in the first round of regular decisions, on Feb. 10, was offered a generous scholarship, $30k, which along w. Work study and the subsidized loans makes it an affordable option. He was disappointed to have not been invited to honors college, but after much deliberating, and whittling his choices from 10 to 2, it came down to URochester and Northeastern. Yesterday we made the deposit for Northeastern. So here’s where the surprise happened. He was filling out his housing/roommate preferences in myneu tonight and there was a question about honors housing. I said “you’re not in honors” but it was a required field so he filled it out and submitted it. Then we noticed another link asking him to accept his invitation to honors, so of course he clicked it. Went into his original Northeastern portal, where his orinpginal acceptance, scholarship and financial aid notifications were, and sure enough, there was a new tab with a letter dated April 28 inviting him into the honors college. Quite pleasantly surprised and wonder how many others received this late invitation.

Never heard of than happening before, but definitely a nice surprise!

@nanotechnology kept thinking it was a mistake. Very strange but in a good way. Confirmed for him that he made the right choice.

I wonder if they were getting how yield and wanted to give some people an extra incentive. But if that were the case, you think they’d really trumpet it to him rather slip it in.

@nanotechnology We made our deposit on Tuesday so he was already committed to attending; happened same day Honors letter was dated, but hard to tell if the letter happened after he had committed. Seems like the two things happened simultaneously and coincidentally. It was rather surreal and I agree, it’s strange how it kind of slipped in. Of course it’s possible he received an email, he’s not great about checking his email regularly. But I’m pretty sure he checked last night and didn’t have anything.

Hello, I’ve decided to switch back to BSBA. I’m wondering if it’s easy for me to get a coop abroad (China)?

Hey @beczhou ! I’m an incoming BSIB student this fall. Was wondering what made you want to switch to BSBA?

@KennethSee I’m actually still torn between bsib and bsba. Not really comfortable with the required study abroad for 1/2 year and I’m not sure if I want to pursue the 5 year program :o

If you do not want to study abroad even for a semester, then a career in international business is a bad idea.

@beczhou Well, I guess @TomSrOfBoston is right. If your hesitation is because you do not want to study/work overseas, BSIB may not be a right fit for you. But you’re right, the 4.5 years is a sucker. I’m trying to use advance placement credits and overload to cut it to 4. Not sure if its possible though.

@kennethseee Are you aware that there is a 5 year option in the BSIB program that leads to a degree from Northeastern and a degree from the foreign partner school? If you are serious about a career in international business this dual degree program is a good option.

@TomSrOfBoston Yeap, I’m aware! I’m from Singapore though, so I had to serve two years of national service in the army before going to university. And I’m planning to do an MBA. If I take the 5 year option, I’ll be really old when I graduate! Plus, it’s extra costs to my parents who are paying for my education.

Are you in the BSIB program as well?

@kennethsee No, I’m an DMSB alum from way back, BSBA.

I didn’t realize that you are international.
