Thank you all for the great suggestions! This helps a lot!
Hi @PengsPhils or any NEU students. I know this is a little late but I was wondering if anyone could answer my question. As of now I am thinking I want to go into graduate school after undergrad and I wasn’t able to find any statistics about grad schools after NEU. Where do kids usually go? How many people go to graduate schools? Is it harder to get in because NEU is such a career focused school as opposed to a school focused on further education? Thanks in advance!
While it’s true that most students don’t look to do grad school at Northeastern, I don’t think it’s not for lack of opportunity, only lack of interest. I honestly only know of a few people doing grad school after, and most are doing very specialized majors so listing off their applications wouldn’t mean much to you. @nanotechnology may know more as a current Ph.D. student from Northeastern undergrad if I’m not mistaken.
Hello. Do students take four classes or five classes each semester? Thanks!
@Dcasas four 4-credit classes each semester (: in the beginning, you’ll take a few 1 credit classes (for business, I believe it’s 3) that meet once a week, which technically makes it 5, but those are general classes that discuss the overview of your major/co-op information – they’re not actual classes that you have exams in or anything
Some classes may require a separate lab class which is 1 credit and usually meets once a week also
So my D has been accepted to NU.In but at full cost -$72K per year, no financial help. Whilst we have some college savings, enough for 1 year, we don’t have the finances to cover 4 years at this cost - means significant debt and loans for us and our D.
So question is - is an NEU degree worth paying full cost?
D has lower cost options like Fordham, Loyola Maryland, UPitt
Welcome any opinions on this as facing good but tough choices
The answer is always no - no college is worth significant debt - select a lower cost option
I would agree with kiddie on this - no college is worth that much debt…
@stepl100 . We are in exactly the same situation as you. Enough for 1 NEU year in the 529 and no merit or financial aid coming from NEU plus the extra NU In cost for first year. My D really wants to go to NEU but we got $25K in annual merit from Drexel and full OOS tuition scholly from Miami of Ohio., For the specific major she is interested in, both these schools are as highly ranked as NEU. We are busting out the spreadsheets this weekend. Good luck.
Adding in my agreement with @kiddie
Fit is all and well, but not worth it when it gets to be over maybe a few ten thousand over the full cost in my opinion. 20K over 4-5 years, sure maybe. 20K a year difference coming from loans or financial hardship? No way.
Replying to ?? on NU for grad school - the University’s year round calendar makes it possible to combine undergrad/grad degrees for some programs. My son is completing joint BS/MS in Computer Science in 5 years (with 3 co-ops, and one summer session abroad). As are 2 of his housemates. Depends on whether or not students come in with AP credits. This somewhat offsets the view on 5 yrs tuition costs for BS only.
I have a lot of questions lol (:
Does anyone know anything about the Living Green LLC personally? I couldn’t find much information about it online, how it compares to other LLC’s, etc.
Also, if I got a 5 on the AP Lang test, should I take the AP Lit exam as well? From what I can tell they both cover the Intro to Writing course so I don’t really see the point of taking the lit test.
I know that NEU is a really great option for studying abroad, esp compared to other colleges for engineering study abroad. What countries are popular for bioengineering majors to do a dialogue or an international coop?
And finally, did anyone go to an admitted student reception in their hometown? I can’t fly out to Boston from the Bay Area for an admitted student day but I still want to learn more because I’m between NEU and UCSB right now. Were these local receptions helpful at all?
If you get a good score on the AP lit exam you get another 4 credits - so do it.
@kiddie Sorry if this is a dumb question but do those four credits just go towards general elective credits? And if I have AP credit that doesn’t match my major, would that be GE’s as well? Thanks
to graduate you need a few things -
you need a particular number of credits (for most majors 128 but it varies),
you need experiential learning (usually co-op),
you need to meet your major requirements - specific required classes in both your major subject and other departments (for example many majors require a specific math class) - some of these are “electives” meaning you can pick which class you want to take ( for example the requirement might be any class in the 3000 range in your major subject)
you need to meet “core” requirements - required gen ed classes (this has had a few different names over the years - now they call it NUPath) - such as first year writing
sometimes a class will fit several of these categories - for example the required calculus class for your major will fill the core FQ category.
Northeastern does limit the number of AP credits - so if you already have 32 without the extra English than don’t bother
“Northeastern accepts up 32 credits of Advanced Test Credit toward your total
required program hours. Advanced Test Credit beyond the 32 limit can still be used
toward course requirements.”
Otherwise, having 8 credits in AP English could help you graduate on time or early, take a lighter load one semester, get off a summer, or have room in your schedule for something fun or for getting a minor in another subject
@kiddie ok that makes sense! Thanks for the response
Good luck with the applications!
Looking for advice on choosing a dorm. We have scoured the website and cannot seem to figure out where the different LLC are located. My child is considering the Computer Science LLC. Any advice or opinions? Is this a popular LLC? What dorm is it housed in and is it housed with other LLC’s? Can you point me to a link that provides information on the different freshman dorm options? When choosing housing do you just put your LLC and not dorm or room type choices? We have not officially committed yet.
You only get to pick your LLC - they move them around each year based upon demand - so you don’t know where any LLC will be this year.
