Ask Questions about Northwestern University Here

So I feel like I may remember someone saying a while back to just let the questions be posted, and not to make a post like this, so if I'm remembering that correctly please feel free to tell me and delete this, or whatever needs to be done.

If not, I, and I'm sure many other people, will be around to answer any questions you might have since Wildcat Welcome is coming up in about two weeks. Don't ask me to chance you, this is mostly for freshman, but I can answer other specific questions too. Just no "NU or this school" or chances.

MODERATOR'S NOTE: Anyone is welcome to ask or answer questions in this thread.

I’m having trouble finding the hours of dorm cafeterias since they are only posting current hours. When are cafeterias open generally? My daughter is an incoming freshman and eats like a rabbit. She eats small healthy things but throughout the day. She’s worried that the cafeteria won’t be open when she’s hungry and that she will waste a meal “swipe” to get an apple. I’m considering getting her an unlimited meal plan just so she can go whenever she wants but it seems silly to pay more for a kid that eats very little! Thanks.

Thought this link gives the hours for all days of the academic year: https://nucuisine.sodexomyway.com/hours/index.html

Unlimited is barely more expensive than the 14 a week meal plan. I’d recommend it if she wants to go in and out.

That link at the moment doesn’t seem to have normal hours. Most dining halls close at 8, but Plex (Foster-Walker) has late night dining. On the weekend Allison, Plex, and Sargent are open most of the day, but not Sunday dinner. There’s pretty much always something open from breakfast until 8 at one of the dining halls.

Anonmom, perhaps your daughter can simply grab an apple, banana, etc at breakfast to eat later on. Or she can go to the CVS on Sherman or the Whole Foods on Chicago Avenue and stock up on granola bars, etc.

With whom does Northwestern most often compete, who are the usual cross-admits and what is the success rate for matriculation against those competitors?

That’s not something that a student would really know, nor is it something that really matters… Sorry, not sure what this has to do with anything

HopkinsMan - it depends on the kids interests, NU offers so many different majors from their different schools, it’s a varied and different list for each school.

Can you tell me what’s so special about NU’s school of communication? How does it correlates to taking classes in Medill ?

Hopkinsman - a student applying to engineering is going to have a different set of schools than a student applying for economics or theater or journalism or music. It’s just not a meaningful question.

And the cross-admit “wins” is a useless metric, because it doesn’t matter what other people prefer. It’s like asking people if they prefer vanilla over chocolate in order to make a decision as to whether YOU like vanilla over chocolate.

Can I double major in theatre at the School of Communications and journalism at the Medill School of Journalism? Excluding the Beinen BM program, it sounds like most double majors are “School X + Weinberg,” but how does one go about majoring at two of the “specialized” schools?

Does Northwestern usually send their applicants an email confirming that they received their application? I applied about a week ago, but I haven’t received anything from them yet.

Crimsonwarrior

You’re right, anyone in a specialized school can 2nd major in any dept in Weinberg. But School of Comm depts (e.g. Theater, Dance, Film Studies) only make available minors, not 2nd majors, to non-SOC students. If you want to pursue a Journalism major, you always have to be enrolled at Medill principally, get a BS there in your chosen specialty area, and can then add on a minor in Theater. Overall, a pretty good deal. The vast majority of Medill grads leave with a 2nd major, minor, and/or Certificate (e.g. IMC).

Thanks for the information, Bala!

Any advice on surviving my first winter. I’m from Miami and have seen snow once. That being said, my first winter will be interesting if I am accepted to NU.

@collegeappstory‌ From a Chicago native, I’d say just buy a winter coat, some nice boots, and hats, gloves, etc. Once you get used to the cold, it’s not so bad :)

@bamboo17‌ when I toured campus last summer I chose a tour guide from El Paso and she said the first winter will be pretty rough but I’ll survive.

Are admission results for early decision posted online (or sent as an email) or as a physical letter? Is it the same for international applicants?

Sent via an email with the link to the decision. Same for every one!

Are they gonna look at Nov SAT scores? Coz they said everything has to be in by this Wednesday, but the Nov scores aren’t out by Tues, so even rush scores doesn’t really make sense?
