Ask Questions about NYU Here

Hi everyone,
since ED results have been released and it’s nearing RD decision time, I’ve decided to log back in and answer any questions you guys might have about life at NYU or whatnot.
Ask me anything! (EXCEPT “chance me” questions; I cannot answer whether or not you will get in because I’m not an admissions officer and there’s a separate Chance Me thread for that anyway.)

MODERATOR’S NOTE: Anyone is free to ask or answer questions in this thread.

  • I’m currently a junior at NYU; I’d put that in the title, but it was edited out.

Hello @koreanstudent. What are you studying at NYU? What made you select it? What are the ranges for class sizes? How is dorm life? Do you have the traditional college experience and comraderie while not being in a dedicated campus in Washington Square. Applied to Stern Business RD and would love your insight.

Hello! It’s been a few days so I figured I’d jump in.

I’m also a current junior at NYU, studying International Relations. I fell in love with it sr year of high school during AP Comparative Government and it’s what I was aiming for when I went to NYU. Class sizes range from lectures with 300 students (mostly core classes) to smaller, 20 people seminars. RN I’m in two 20-person classes and one 100+ person lecture–but all the big lectures have recitations or labs that break you into groups of about 20 people to review content. I honestly feel like Washington Square IS a dedicated campus and I do feel like I have a good college experience and camaraderie, and being in Stern will help even more since it’s a smaller school. Dorm life I would say is pretty standard, although it varies on where you live.

@wonderlanddd Thank you. Good point about Stern being smaller. Washington Square has a different vibe versus other campuses but definitely in an unexpectedly nice way. It was interesting seeing the mix of students, residents, workers, musicians and tourists out having lunch by the fountain.

When it gets warm outside, WSP is full of students! It’s not uncommon to walk through the park and see a group of people you know studying on one of the lawns. It really does feel like a quad! I almost feel bad for the actual New Yorkers we’re displacing haha. But I think the whole “no campus” thing is something a LOT of people fear about NYU that most actual NYU students will tell you isn’t exactly true. Objectively, we have no dedicated campus, but…if you say “hey I’m headed down to campus” or “hey I’m on campus” everyone knows what you mean. I say “the chipotle on campus” to refer to the Chipotle that is a regular public Chipotle but is across the street from one of our biggest buildings, and everyone knows what I mean when I say that. It’s not exactly the same, it’s a much different vibe (in, imo, a very good way), but it’s not like we’re wandering about a campus-less wasteland with no sense of community or belonging like I think it is sometimes made out to be. And honestly, I love it!
