Ask questions about summer programs here!

@awang1102

For BU RISE, there are two tracks: Internship and Practicum. If you get the internship track, I would say go for it because I know people from the program. Most of the students end up at t20s and some go into HYPSM. Iowa SSTP is ok but it isn’t too prestigious IMO.

@CaliMex
Try Beaverworks. If that doesn’t work out, then shoot me a PM and we can figure something out for this summer!

@GoBears2023,
Can you please send me PM. I have a couple of questions regarding summer Program. I can’t PM you.
I will really appreciate it.

@GoBears2023
For the Beaverworks program, should the student have started the online course before starting the summer program application? I am a little confused.Thank you for your help!

@Grrr123

Yes, you must complete the online course before working on the summer program application.

@GoBears2023 Hi I’m a ninth grader in the Bay Area and really eager to look into internships for this summer. You mentioned earlier that you know a few internship places. Could you please give me some suggestions. I can PM you my stats if you want. Thanks!!

Hi @GoBears2023,
For all those competitive high school summer programs, can you tell me which once require interviews? If they do, how do we prepare for the online interviews? Thanks.

@Valchoi

Not a lot of them actually require interviews. The only ones I can think of are TASP and LaunchX.

Can people recommend a good debate summer program? And good private debate coach also? Thank you.

@MistyMorning

It depends on which debate format you do and what your experience level is. If it’s Public Forum, NDF, VBI, and ISD are all excellent for tech and competing on the national circuit, with NDF probably being the most tech out of the three, and ISD the most beginner friendly. For LD, I’ve heard good things about NSD and VBI, especially for tech. I’m not sure about Policy; our school doesn’t have a team.

As far as finding a debate coach, if you’re aiming to become competitive on the nat circuit, make NSDA and TOC, I would recommend reaching out to high school debaters who are now in college. Also, reach out to current seniors/soon-to-be first year outs! Most of them are more than happy to coach individuals, or even teams.

@GoBears2023 , I dm’d you.

@curiousme2
I’ve responded :smiley:

My c got into Princeton AI4All and Johns Hopkins EI, which is awesome but I don’t think we can afford both. Any thoughts/advice?

@zenmindmom

Given that your child is into CS, I would say that he/she should choose AI4All since it will be more geared to their academic interests. Also, the program is fairly prestigious :slight_smile: Hope this helps!

Iowa Young Writers Studio versus Kenyon Young Writers Workshop

@jazhope321

From what I understand, the Iowa Young Writers Studio program is one of the best writing programs out there, given that Iowa is what some may call the pinnacle for writing education. Hope this helps!

@GoBears2023 Do you know which clusters at COSMOS are the most competitive? You mentioned that you previously attended the math cluster at UC Davis; is this one of them? I’ve heard that the first-choice only clusters are the hardest to get into as well.

@Renhart333

First-choice clusters are the hardest to get into. The professor who I studied under told us that out of 400 applications for mathematics that year, they only acceptance 25 of us, which equates to 6.25% acceptance rate. Any of the bio clusters are also super competitive and if you get into them in either your freshman or sophomore summer, you have a good shot at some of the more prestigious research camps like SSRP and HSHSP.

@GoBears2023
I got accepted to Cosmos, the cluster writing iOS apps. I am still struggling my choice between Cosmos and the research opportunity at a local university. The research is a group project, it is only one month long. The professor owns all the information and will not allow student to publish their part on their own. If I want to apply for some competitive research program next year, what would you choose?

@Valchoi

COSMOS all the way unless that research opportunity can get you a published paper.

My child got picked into Turner Voices Youth Media Institute (TVYMI)'s week long summer program conducted by 21st Century Leaders. Do you think it will weigh in on college application? Thanks.
