Thanks - we’ll get a good, thick foam pad. I had a feeling that the houses weren’t consistent with each other. Can’t wait to find out which one she’ll be in.

The beds are Twin XL so require “extra long” sheets… I bought this pad two years ago and it is still holding up.

I too would wait on the rug until you see the room and work it out with her roommate. You might want to use Google Maps to familiarize your self with the various stores on Route 9 South of town. We spent some time driving out looking to get various electric extensions, under bed storage boxes, more hangers, etc.

Once you know which dorm perhaps one of the students can post some pictures.

Good luck

Couldn’t agree more. There’s a Target at the mall that is full of dorm stuff and during the orientation days there is time to go and van service to take them there. There is also van service every weekend. Wait until you see what you really need. Five foot by five foot over summer storage in the area is $200 for un air-conditioned and $350 for controlled climate so there is no point in having too much stuff.

ctarent2006: Are all the beds XL? I was under the impression that you had to request the XL and that there was a limited number of them.

What goes on during Orientation? Are there things that involve the parents? I’m in rehearsal here at home - wouldn’t you know it - my school starts the week before move-in and we’re right into work on the fall musical. I’m planning on missing Aug. 24-25, and much as it breaks my heart, it’s going to be hard to be gone more than that. If there are scheduled things at Vassar, I’ll work on it, though.

SEGA: I’ve been checking out the Vassar area on Google - and, thanks, it’s been fun. I noticed that there’s no Wal-Mart in Poughkeepsie. I love Target, but I’ve always found Wally World to be cheaper on lots of things. Oh, well. The D would much prefer Target anyway.

Best to check with housing on the bed size to be certain. So far XL sheets and pad have worked both years at Vassar and the same for three years elsewhere for my son.

There is not much for parents during orientation. I did the drop off and leave quickly bit myself…after that shopping trip on Route 9 of course… I am partial to Home Depot and Lowes for last minute furnishing myself. You should naturally coordinate with her roommate to make sure you don’t duplicate things needlessly.

There are some Wal-Marts within driving range if you want to explore. The Palisades Center Mall is about 75 minutes away with may stores and there is a huge outlet mall called Woodbury Common in Harrimann/Central Valley that is an hour away. Something to do if you want to hang around but not on campus.

How does taking a subject as a correlate sequence differ from minoring/majoring in that subject?

A correlate is just vassar lingo for a minor, I think

I don’t suppose any of the Computer Science classes count for the Quantitative Course requirement?

Hey, how is the financial aid program for internationals? Is it really cut-throat ? Does a sub-2100(2050) score have a shot? How much emphasis is put on test scores?

I got in with a 2020, but an excellent TOEFL and good GPA and activities and all that - enough to please Vassar, I guess. So I guess they care more for GPA and ECs, essays, etc. Where are you from? Are you thinking of applying ED? As for finaid for internationals - Vassar promises to provide 100% of need (http://admissions.vassar.edu/applyinternational_faq.html#aid</a>) in case of acceptances, but they’re not need-blind when it comes to admitting internationals.

Computer Courses do count for the Quantitative requirement.

In the full schedule anything with a QA covers it.

Good luck

The D really wants an iPhone for her 18th birthday next week. I’m curious about the 3G network. Is it really as deadzone free as they say? We’ve always used TracPhone because it’s a no-brainer as far as costs. They are supposed to have the best network in the country. Would my D have any trouble with a iPhone?

Thanks, current Vassar types.

I wouldn’t get an iPhone because people at Vassar steal things A LOT.

Whoa, really?

That’s a pretty heavy generalization. Is that a sentiment shared by many or is it just your experience, dc89?

Unfortunately, it’s a sentiment shared by many - there are emails out a few times a year from security reminding us not to leave things laying around. I don’t leave my door unlocked, nor do I ever leave my laptop or bags unattended, but even I’ve had cash stolen from my wallet at Vassar (I think it was probably stolen while I was in the shower, the only time I leave my door unlocked). A friend of a friend had a laptop stolen from his apartment (on-campus senior housing) at the end of this year; I know someone who had their coat stolen from one of the cubbies at the Mug (the on-campus dance club) one weekend night.

I feel like a lot of my posts here are always hating on Vassar… I really, truly love the place. I just want people to be aware of the school’s less positive aspects! So basically, keep your eyes on your stuff and keep your door locked and you should be MOSTLY okay.

I was looking at the insurance offered through the school, and there’s a personal property policy that covers up to $2000 worth of stuff for $60/year with a $25 deductible. That’s not bad. Seems like it would be worth having.

I got the insurance for my son last year and just renewed. Didn’t need it, but for the price it provided significant peace of mind.

I love Vassar for its strong academics and beautiful campus, but I’m concerned over whether or not I would fit in socially. I am a male whose extracurricular interests are centered in sports, I hardly consider myself artsy at all, and I’m not very into the drug or alcohol scene. Given Vassar’s reputation as being artsy, do you think I would be able to find friends at Vassar with interests similar to mine and be happy for four years? I hope I am not stereotyping or offending in my judgments of the people at the school, but this is a big concern of mine, since I absolutely love everything about Vassar. Thanks!

Closest Wal-Mart is south of Pok on Route 9 in Fishkill (at the intersection of Route 9 and I-84). If you’re spending a few days there and have a car, it’s not that far. Shouldn’t take more than 20min -1/2 hour.

There’s a Kmart fairly close to Vassar on Dutchess Tpke/Route 44…in a strip mall
