Ask the Director of Admissions

How many early decision applicants are athletes? I am curious as to why the admission rate for early decision is almost 100% greater than regular decision.

Also, everyone should chill out. If you get rejected you still have time to submit regulars to other universities! I don’t think their decisions are coming out particularly late. Granted, I only got all my documents turned in very recently (HS counselor issues).

Ermsam, in American’s case, it’s mostly about yield protection. They know they’re not going to lose the ED admits to other colleges.

I said “borderline disrespectful.” And yes, I don’t think it is fair to the applicants to be in the dark about when they’ll find out, and on top of that, to send the info so the applicants won’t receive it until after winter break starts and can’t share it with their friends. My son, and the others who are waiting on AU, have to sit patiently while all of their friends find out if they got into the schools of their choice. It’s hard on the kids to not even be able to say “I find out on December ___.” The info from AU Admissions has been vague. There is no reason not to let the kids know that decisions will be mailed on X date.

It’s posted on the admissions page that students who apply Early Decision by Nov. 15 will be notified of their decisions by December 31. That deadline hasn’t passed. And missing that deadline is what would be disrespectful.

You want AU to deliver you more than they promised to by giving your an answer before the deadline, and to notify you beforehand how much more they’ll deliver. Honestly, I think that’s presumptuous. Even if “all the other colleges do it.”

Clearly, I’m no great defender of American’s admissions office–I think a lot of other offices run better–but I think you’re inventing offenses that don’t exist.

Maybe they aren’t done reviewing applications yet, maybe it’s just their normal policy and that’s the way they like it. In any case, no one’s in the dark. The 12/31 date has been there for all to see. Those to whom it was that upsetting shouldn’t have applied ED. As for it being “unfair” that an applicant can’t share the decision with friends because school will be out–um, Facebook??? I understand the anxiety over waiting for acceptances, but let’s not overreact. Most kids aren’t going to know about their acceptances until May 1. AU ED applicants will know within 2 weeks. They’ll survive.

if they website says Dec. 31, then I would expect a decision on Dec. 31–and if earlier, great.

I remember my son waiting for his AU ED decision…his year the calls did come early but when the call came, it was totally unexpected as at that point he thought he still had a couple of weeks left to wait.

As far as athletes and ED at AU–probably not a big concern to the admissions office. At
AU athletics are rather an afterthought. My son had the chance to play on the AU soccer team but decided that for the first time since he was 8 he wanted a “normal” school experience, and he chose to play for the club team instead. he wasn’t the only one on the club team who made that choice–club team (at least the years he chose to play on it) could more than hold it’s own against the official AU team–and most of the guys were friends.

Good luck wishes to all the students…and their even more stressed-out parents…this last stretch of waiting.

The main problem for a lot of students (including myself) is that in case we’re rejected ED from American, we’d need time to pay for and send out test scores and applications to RD schools. Some of my schools have January 1st deadlines. It would be terrible to waste hundreds of dollars applying and then finding out that I’ve been accepted, and it would be terrible to wait too long so that my materials aren’t submitted in time in the case I am rejected.

That being said, I do hope they make calls (and ofc that I get one :P) and that decisions are mailed out asap!

I hope you get one too!

We made my son do his RD apps alongside his ED application…for two reasons:

–because we didn’t want him to have to tackle the RD apps under pressure to get them in on time and with the extra stress that would have resulted had he not been accepted

–we figured that the work on the other applications would help him hone his AU application, to make it shine and stand ot.

If you look at the AU Admissions twitter or Facebook, they’ve stated that they’re going to be mailing out the packages by “end of the week.” I’m going to assume this means tomorrow, and anyone who receives calls will likely receive one tomorrow night! I know it’s stressful, especially for everyone who has friends having already been accepted, but worrying about it isn’t going to make it happen quicker. Good luck everyone!

They are definitely sending letters today, I talked to my admissions rep earlier in the week. However, she did not say anything about calls being made so that’s still anyone’s guess.

Will they send emails to international students on the same day that they mail them to domestic students ?

Someone on another thread got an email acceptance today. She lived in South America.
Good Luck!

I’m in California!

The second supplement question says “in two paragraphs” but then when I submitted it said I was over the 250 word limit. Any insight into what I should do? Do I cut the nearly 100 words I am over or is this a glitch in the common app? My response is 2 paragraphs, they are just meaty and descriptive.
