Ask vicissitudes: Spring Admits (FAQ included)

But since the adcom appeals committee already rejected my appeal to defer admission, should I still call up the admission office or just call College of Letters and Science(which I'm in)?

Wouldn't hurt. Just ask if there's anything you can do in this situation.

is financial aid less if you're a fpf student than a regular fall admit?

the thing is, when i was reviewing my award summary on bear facts, i realized that my estimated budget for the year was calculated for OFF-CAMPUS HOUSING, and thus I was offered less aid in terms of grants and whatnot than my friends who are fall admits (our efc is the same). I don't know where they get this information of me living off campus from because I will certainly dorm if I were to receive housing. did the financial aid office dismiss all spring admits into the off-campus housing pile (since housing is not guaranteed for us) or is mine simply a clerical error? The reason I'm so iffy about this is that I'm really scared that I would be given aid designated for off-campus housing when in fact I would be dorming (if that is the case). if my housing gets confirmed for the year, would they increase the amount of aid i receive accordingly?

somebody pleaseee help me :(.....hhhmmmmm maybe i should call the damn school.

No, it shouldn't be less...you should probably call the financial aid office and get it straightened out.

how do I send FPF my IB scores?

hmmmmmmm
i'm not sure if anyone's already asked you this but
what should we do if we don't get on-campus housing?
D:!!

I think you either get an email about that or find it on their website but I think what you do is copy the documents with your IB scores and then mail it in.

Right, so you can do a few things.

Themed housing - it’s in a dorm and is pretty much like a dorm except there’s a “theme” such as all Asian-Americans on the floor. Also you have to take a 2-unit course on it. You have to apply for themed housing.

Co-ops - a bunch of people live together and share the housework, but it’s cheap relative to the other options.

Apartments - you usually find them on craigslist.

They have workshops explaining this stuff at CalSO too, if you’re going to that.

My friend called the housing office and they told him that he's at number 310. They said they expect 170 spots. Is there any glimmer of hope or should he just look for other housing right away?

170 spots?? If that's really true then they reallly screwed up this year. Worse than last year. Anyway, I dunno. CalSO gives some good info about alternative housing so I might wait until then, but it doesn't hurt to start looking now. It's hard to say because spots might open up later on (as late as August).

yeah i called calhousing too and its 170 spots for boys and another 170 for girls. i'm #220 and they said it would be unlikely for me to get a dorm. do you know any other good alternatives besides co-ops and apartments?

can we still apply for apath??! i can't seem to find a deadline on the site

^ i got into apath. just email them...?

The dealine, which I believe is June 1st, has already passed, but you may still apply for theme housing. You may be placed on a waitlist if you are accepted and the theme program is full. Apply ASAP if you still want to.

By the way, here's the reply from the housing office:

We expect to house around half of the FPF students, which is considerably more than 140. You should contact Res Hall Assignments at 642-4108 or reshall@berkeley.edu to find out your lottery number. They expect to make offers in mid-July. If you have not already explored some of the private rooming houses as alternatives, in case you don't get an offer. If you don't have a copy of the list of these alternatives, please let us know and we can send you one.

^ Just wondering, what area code is that phone number?

Thanks DorisZ for helping out with the questions. Half the students sound a lot more reasonable than 170. The figure of "170 for boys and 170 for girls" which would add up to 340 sounds about right. Calling and finding out your lottery number is something I haven't heard before, so maybe it's something new this year. The area code is most likely 510. Anyway, start looking around for other options but keep in mind spots may open up later in August.

apt people need to get furniture, but do dormers need to as well? i think the bed and dresser is provided, aren't they? and some of my friends have been getting catalogues from their colleges to order the sheets and all that stuff for their dorm beds, but do cal students get those or do we just bring our own stuff from home?

^ the bed and dresser are provided...not the sheets though.

go here:

For FPF housing, I found out today that I'm pretty much last to get housing. Anyone know what kind of housing is typically left over at the very end?

thanks cathers that link is really helpful
