Ask vicissitudes: Spring Admits (FAQ included)

damn, i just found out my lottery number is 355. Although i'm planning to apply for theme housing (the Asian American and Women in engineering ones), anyone know how likely i am to get them provided i have a decent app? Do they look at a lot of the apps then decide, decided on the spot, or is it like a first come first serve thing?

^ you do know that there was a deadline for the theme housing.....?

what really?? how come i can still access the application? or, what and where was the deadline?

^hmmmm cant find when the fall one was =/ i was pretty sure that i found it somewhere O_o ill keep on looking......buuuut........the deadline to apply for Spring 2008 housing is October 1, 2007. not like that would matter that much anyways since you're trying to look for housing for fall =/

i asked the RA, and she said

"right now the roster is full...people can still send me an application, but they will be put on the waitlist and if anyone who is currently in APATH leaves then they will be able to join..."

Is 170 girls and 170 guys the exact number that they can accomodate or will more spaces open up? I'm number 243 and would really want a dorm. However, this looks very unlikely if housing is only providing so few spots...

so when do we find out if we get housing or not?

if we don't what are the alternatives? is it hard to find apartments around berkeley right now?

Huh, I thought I posted a reply here a few days back, but I guess it didn't go through. Here's to typing it up again...

It depends on what other people are requesting, but I'd guess the rooms in Foothill, Bowles, and Stern, as those tend to be more unpopular.

It's definitely not a purely first-come-first-serve thing and they look at your app. I'm not sure when the deadline is...try looking up their website.

Well, more spots generally open up later on, but if you don't get an offer at first it's recommended that you start looking for other options. You can always try for housing in the spring too.

I think last year you found out in either late July or early August. The alternatives tend to be themed housing, co-ops, and apartments. It's not "hard" to find apartments around Berkeley so much as it is hard to find affordable apartments that are nearby. Most students (i.e. not freshmen) have already found apartments to live in for next year so it might take a bit of searching.

when do fpf people choose their meal plan?

I would use the term "choose" loosely. After you get housing (well, if you get housing) you'll probably want to just sign up for the standard plan although there is an option to sign up for the premium plan which is just more points...and most people don't need more points.

I found out my lottery number is 57, but I'm wondering if they put us in a pool of only boys or girls, or everyone enrolled in FPF. Because if I'm #57 out of 800, I think I'll have a pretty good chance of getting the housing I want...

Also, after sending in the class-scheduling application w/ exam scores attached, is there anything else we're supposed to do involving classes?

Sounds like you're all set.

is it too late to apply for themed housing and co-ops?

if we dont get a dorm for fall for the fall extension students, do we get another chance during the spring?

finding an apartment is hassle

Yeah you can apply again for spring semester. I know some spring admits who got in during the spring. I hear themed housing deadline passed (it was a page or two back in this thread)...look up their websites to find out. Maybe I'll look it up later.

I thought spring housing for spring admits is guaranteed.

I've heard that rumor but I haven't seen any confirmations on any Cal Housing-related websites so for the time-being I'm going to assume that it's not guaranteed.

Also, I was reading some old threads and noticed that last year, FPF students actually got their housing around July 11th, which makes sense since when they had their CalSO they already knew about their dorm status. I said "early August" several times in this thread but apparently I remembered wrong. Sorry about the misinformation.

how did you guys received the lottery numbers? i didnt get any email?

call 510 642 4108 and ask for your lottery number there

I have a question regarding off-campus housing.

How do I apply for housing at Telegraph Commons? Do they have an online application I can submit? Or is an appointment/open house on-campus visit necessary? In addition, what exactly is open house?

I e-mailed George, but his responses weren't very helpful. Their office is closed until July 15.

im writing my essays for the theme house app, but if you're applying to more than one theme housing, do you write all the essays in the same little box, or do you sumbit the application more than once?
