I was admitted to UCSD with no financial aid and no merit scholarships.
It is my top choice school, and I’m honestly not considering the other schools I applied for because they’re so expensive, but I did get 17k from URochester, which has a similar admittance rate to UCSD.
There’s no question I’ll be calling UCSD’s fin aid office to see if I can ask for money, but I’m not sure what to say/how to go about this. Do I need to make an appointment or something? Do I just straight up say that I need more money, and I’m getting more from other schools?
Any advice is really appreciated.
It’s my understanding that’s not something you ask for. Merit is by their choice not yours.
If you look at the common data sets for 2013-14
http://studentresearch.ucsd.edu/_files/stats-data/common-data-set/h.pdf
Out of some 5,200 who applied only 79 got merit aid. That’s it. UCSD is not known for giving lots of aid either.
When in doubt what your chances are for anything, always check the common data sets for a college.
Are you OOS and not eligible for any instate grants?
@Rdtsmith - I am out of state, but I get in state tuition because of this thing my town has with the UC schools.
I’m still in need of like 10k though…
I’d call and ask if there are any other programs, scholarships, or grants you can be considered for and what you need to do. You don’t really care what they call it, you just want it. Last year I called my daughter’s school to ask how to appeal the FA award as my job would be ending. She said I couldn’t appeal until the job ended, but about two weeks later, and alum scholarship appeared in DD’s portal. Coincidence?
