Asking for letters of recommendation four weeks into a class? Quarter system.

Hey CC -

I’m a first-year undergraduate at a four-year state university on the quarter system and I’m looking to transfer to another university as a sophomore. I’m having one professor from Fall 2019 write a letter of recommendation, but the other Fall 2019 professors likely aren’t a good source (classes were large so I wasn’t able to make an impression on them).

I’m in Winter quarter now, and with the transfer application deadlines in March 1 or March 15, I was wondering if it’s possible to ask a professor from Winter 2020 to write me a letter of rec? That would mean four weeks of diligently working hard in the class, going to office hours, and killing the assignments. It also means asking them for a letter of rec at the end of January, so they have February to write a letter of rec in time for the March deadlines.

Any thoughts on this process? Is it inappropriate for me to ask a professor for a letter of rec mid-quarter? Is it possible? Has it been done before? Any feedback, suggestions, thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks CC!

Do you expect anything more than something on the order of:

“During the eight 50 minute class sessions, @maliciouspdf attended during the past 4 weeks, they distingusihed themselves by rarely yawning and repeatedly coming to office hours with ingratiating questions. They also handed in all assignments correctly and on time in a legible handwriting, which was most satisfying and somewhat unusual. I look forward to seeing how they perform on the midterm…”
