Asking professors for letter of recommendation for internship?

I'm considering applying to a research experience for undergraduates program (REU) and I'm required to submit two letters of recommendation from science professors. I attend a small liberal arts college where the class sizes are tiny and all the professors know all the students pretty well. I have a good relationship with one I'm planning on asking him. My problem is with asking a second professor - I want to ask my organic chemistry professor because I'm currently getting an "A" in the course. I also have the highest grade in the class. The problem is that when I took general chemistry with him last fall I got a "C" in the course. I have obviously improved as a student and I spend lots of time in office hours. I am very enthusiastic about the class and the lab, but I'm worried that my past mistake will hurt my chances of getting this crucial letter of recommendation. Thoughts??

Also, if they ask why I want to do this particular internship, what is a good reason? I understand that the truth would be nice but I don't have a solid reason of why I want to do this exact internship. I'm planning on saying the obvious, that it would help with grad school etc. Is there a better, more directed answer to this question? I'm drawing a blank.

Also, any suggestions on what I can expect the professors to say with regards to the letters of rec? Any help is appreciated!! Thank you!

What can that second prof say about you? You have good marks? That doesn't tell anyone about your character. Of course, if you don't have other better profs, it's better than nothing.
