Hello,
I’m currently an undergraduate student of UC San Diego majoring in music, but if anyone could give some advice or some answers, I would greatly appreciate it.
I am thinking of becoming a video game music composer in the future, but I also feel like my current university has not given me much advice nor preparation as to what to do for that, since its music program is not the biggest of music programs. In addition, UC San Diego’s specialty is experimental contemporary music, so I feel that I have not been able to get the advice and help that I needed. I do have a goal to go to a graduate school for composing music, although I feel like my preparations have been lackluster.
However, as starters, what I was told from a couple of teaching assistants was that I should find some sound libraries, look at orchestral scores whenever possible, make friends within the community of composers and developers, and gain as many recommendations as possible.
Since my preparations have felt lackluster I have also considered attending the LA Film School of Music and polishing up on more skills/recommendations before attempting to apply for graduate schools of composition. They have told me that they had a 70% success rate, but I felt that I couldn’t really believe it until I found out from someone else as well. Has anyone in this forum attended this place before? If so, can anyone be able to tell me if it would be a good idea to consider the option of attending LA Film School?
This is about all I know. If there is anything else that is important that I should know and that I am missing out on, please let me know, whether there are other options/paths I could take or if there is some other crucial information that I should know about in order to become a video game music composer.
Any help/information is greatly appreciated. Thank you!
