Associates of Science and/or Associates of Arts

Hello, I am currently attending a community college and will be either graduating from there in the spring or just transferring to university next fall. This depends on the classes I take next spring. I spoke with the counselor and she said that I can actually get both degrees next spring if I take the right classes. I will be taking 5 classes regardless of if I go for the AA, AS, or both (but I have to take two 5 credit classes if I want to meet the requirements for both). My question is there even a point in having both an AS and an AA? I am looking to either attend my instate public universities (UNLV or UNR) or if it is affordable transfer out of state. I have a 3.85 at the moment but I believe that is going to drop since I am at the borderline of a C+/B- in one of my classes.

My questions:

Is there a point in getting both an AS or AA?
- I am majoring in Business Administration but perhaps might change to a Criminal Justice, Political Science, or Philosophy for preparation for law school.

Do I have an opportunity to transfer to an OOS school without going in serious debt? If so, what caliber schools should I be looking to?

If anyone has any information on the subject should I attend UNR or UNLV? I am leaning towards UNLV because it is more business/law oriented and I feel that Las Vegas has more internship opportunities than the Reno/Carson City area but I personally prefer the campus of UNR as opposed to UNLV.

I apologize if there is a lot to read. I really appreciate any input though.

Getting a 2 yr degree is good if the school you are transferring to has an agreement that guarantees acceptance with a 2 yr degree or you don’t finish your 4 yr degree. But once you get your BA/BS, your 2 yr degree won’t matter.

I’m not sure if you’re referring to OOS publics or privates as well. For OOS publics, it tends to be difficult because need based FA is limited for OOS students; UNC-CH and UVA are the exceptions. For privates (which treat IS and OOS students the same), there are some schools that have very generous need based FA for transfers, but they are also the most selective schools in the country and have very low transfer rates. There are some schools with merit for transfers but there are fewer awards and the amounts tend to be less than for fr applicants; see the Resources sticky thread at the top of this forum for a link.

Sorry, I don’t know much about the NV schools, you might try asking on the College Search & Selection or Business Major forum.

Thank you for your response. If anyone else would like to add something please feel free.
