My EFC according to the fafsa is 001832. I noticed there is an asterisk next to this number and it says it needs to be verified. I have not received any emails about how to do this. Does each college verify or do I verify directly with fafsa? what exactly does the number 001832 mean?

Secondly, I received my financial aid package from Niagara University and the Pell grant I received is only $1900, it also says Federal Perkins loan is only $775. When I used the fafsa forecaster I was getting amount much larger than these.

The Pell is $1900 per semester, correct? If you multiply that times 2, you get $3800. Add to that your EFC of $1832, and you get $5632. That Pell is correct for your EFC if it is for EACH of two semesters,

Perkins loans are NOT guaranteed awards. Each school gets a limited amount of Perkins Loan money and awards it as they choose to. There is no “specific” amount you can expect to receive. You got $775.

You should also have received a Direct Loan…total amount for Freshman year is $5500.

Re: verification…your colleges will tell you what to send them.

Make sure you watch your school email and monitor the financial aid section of your student portal, if your school has made these available to you. They may use these methods of communication for requesting verification documentation.

When there is an asterisk, does the student send stuff to all of his schools? Or if he sends to one, will that one review and state that things are complete?

My understanding is that each school will make its own requests.

Using the DRT should satisfy most of the verification for all schools but then each school will have a form or two to confirm other aspects of the fafsa.

Just to reiterate what kelsmom said, if you have been given access to any of the school’s email systems or online portals, be sure to monitor them. They may have a finaid ‘To Do’ list or other notification of requirements you need to comply with.

The school will make its own requests for information but be vigilant about checking emails and FA portals.

I had an asterisk every year but was never verified. My school used some weird system apparently.

Romani’s school had a special agreement with the feds to select and verify groups based on their own internal selection. It’s called the Quality Assurance program. This is why, even though “all” FAFSA’s with an asterisk by the EFC must be verified, yours might not be. In most cases. you will be asked to provide information, though … and now the feds have what is called targeted verification. You might not be asked to provide income info at all. Your selection may have been based on some other aspect of your information, so you may be asked to provide something like proof of identity and a statement of educational purpose. Or you might simply be asked to provide proof of child support paid. It is important to contact the aid office if you are not sure about something related to your financial aid (that is, after you first check your email - including your spam folder - and your student portal).
