Asthma/allergy doctors?

We need to locate an asthma/allergy specialist close to UArts. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Jefferson University Hospital has an asthma/allergy center. Jefferson is a 5 minute walk from UArts and is top flight. If you do a Google search for "Jefferson University Philadelphia asthma allergy" you should get the relevant web pages.

MNK-You are amazing. You have been so generous with your time and knowledge about Philly and UArts. Sounds like the folks in Philly are also "top flight"!

You might want to begin your search with Dr. Sataloff & his practice @ the below link; (He's affiliated with Jefferson Hospital & has a private practice on Pine St.)
PENTA: Philadelphia Ear, Nose and Throat Associates: Our Physicians

Mainstage knows her docs. Sataloff and his practice is probably the preeminent vocal medicine and health practice in the country. It draws patients not only from around the country but also internationally - and it's right in UArts back yard. My daughter started seeing them her senior year of HS and participated in the most amazing battery of testing using an incredible array of various scopes as well as computer modeling that took her vocalizations and produced graphs and images of her vocal apparatus functions. For the medical exam she worked with one doc, for all the scientific testing, with another and then the results of both were integrated to put together a remedial program implemented by a speech therapist and vocal performance specialist. It turned out that my daughter didn't have any serious problems, but the process enabled her to better understand the way her individual vocal apparatus works and the kind of exercises and care which are tailored to her individual needs. She continues to see one of the docs in the practice for periodic vocal health checks. What I think is the greatest is that every single person we deal with sincerely treats my daughter as a vocal professional as deserving of their attention and expertise as the most accomplished and experienced performer.

I don't think, however, that the practice deals directly with the treatment of asthma or allergies but I'm sure would address issues involving the impact of asthma and allergies on the vocal apparatus.

While we are on the question of docs, if anyone has the need of an orthopedist, Jefferson also has the Rothman Institute at which there is a Dr. Harwood who serves as the orthopedic consultant for the UArts dance department.

The spring/summer prior to my D's arrival at UArts, we had been in contact with Dr. Sataloff (I won't bore you with details). I found Dr. Sataloff while doing research and small world, turned out that one of my D's ENT's had actually studied with him. After going through many ENT, Allergists, Pulmonary Specialists and the list goes on. My D had talked another ENT into a Tonsillectomy...turns out she was right..they were inflamed (this was only apparent during surgery-yikes!). Anyway after yrs. of shots (5 yrs.), inhalers, machines, visits, tests and way too many meds, unfortunately, we are semi-experts in asthma and allergy related topics. (Of course, this was my D's case not advocating the surgery as the answer to any isolated case.)

ENT physicians do indeed deal with the treatment of asthma and allergy.

The fact that Dr. Sataloff's group specialize in vocal health is icing on the cake for our special singers. :-)

P.S. I was under the impression that the school was affiliated with this group or (is it) another for vocal issues - don't recall where I read this.

Mainstage, that's great to know. For whatever reason, it never occurred to me that Sataloff's practice also handled asthma and allergies. Talk about "one stop shopping" :) . I don't know if UArts has an official affiliation with the practice but in practical terms, every performing arts school and company in the city, whether vocal or instrumental, has some relationship with the practice.

also, so anyone knows....Dr. Spiegel (i think that's how it is spelled) at the Jefferson Hospital is great in dealing with singers and vocal issues....
