D is trying to decide between The Ohio State & ASU/Barrett Honors program. At Ohio State, she got direct admit to Fisher College of Business/Marketing (she may switch to Supply Chain Mgt) & in the Int’l Affairs Scholars program which I think puts her in Smith-Steeb dorm (nice). At ASU she got into Barrett Honors College, WP Carey Business School/Marketing. She likes both campuses a LOT, cost is the same for both with merit scholarships (she’s OOS). Her concerns about Ohio State are winter weather, not getting into the intl affairs scholars dorm, off campus housing may be not so great, sheer size of campus, Greek life may not be vibrant. Her concerns about ASU are HOT weather in Sept & April/May, poor reputation of ASU in general, Tempe in general, Greek life may not be great, school spirit is questionable. She loves Ohio State’s school spirit, but is very concerned she may not be able to get the football package b/c freshman are last on the list.

Any suggestions on deciding would be much appreciated. I’m also going to post in Ohio State forum.

I dont know Ohio state personally, but I do know a neighbour who’s DD11 did freshman year at Ohio and then trf’d back to ASU, but had to do cc to make up credits and get in-state tuition for ASU, she is know a junior at ASU but the family are here in Tempe. Tempe is not so bad, off campus housing is dominated by ASU students its cheap, but thats about all, ASU doesnt have alot of school spirit outside of football games and limited on campus housing for any other than freshman degrades the full on campus college experience in my view. You are right to have issue with the weather at both schools, Tempe is incredibly HOT really April-May through Sept/Oct, I expect the same for Ohio just the opposite months with cold. Greek life is really not a big deal at ASU Pres Crow has tried to push all greek off campus and this has caused many more issues, greek life in general is not key or at all visible really.

In my view ASU’s reputation is a big issue (they accept 90% of applicants but do offer good aid) but Barrett is nice and dorm/meals are good, but I don’t think Ohio State’s is really any better.

Thanks, Englishman. USNWR ranks Ohio State #52 in the country (same as George Washington, University of Washington, UT-Austin, Tulane), so it does rank pretty high & I would hope it’s reputation is a bit better than regular ASU, which ranks $142 overall. Plus OSU ranks #4 (just after ASU) for Supply Chain.

Not sure any of that matters, but it helps put things in context. She also got into Santa Clara U, U Miami (FL) with some scholarship, UC Santa Barbara, Univ. AZ honors, Cal Poly SLO business, U of Georgia, UC Davis, U Wisconsin (waitlisted) plus some others - most of with scholarships of varying amounts. She just liked the Ohio State and ASU campuses, programs, & vibe the best, for whatever reason, plus those 2 gave her the best scholarships such that it’s as cheap for her to attend those two as it is our home state flagship (CU Boulder).

Your D got into some good schools, since you are in CO and close to Arizona seems it could be a good fit, many CO students in AZ the weather helps. I would ignore rankings at this type of college and look for fit, seems both ASU and OU would be a good fit, that said your other choices seem good and with good merit, I think some seem interesting, my DS is at U of Az and loves it great school, UCSB in Goleta as you know is gorg great beach life and good programs, personally I wouldn’t touch Georgia or Wisconsin unless you want to go back to the last century!. Seems you may have a straight fight between Ohio State and ASU.

I’m in this with you my DS14 has a choice of Vassar College, Wesleyan University and Amherst and can’t/won’t decide 7 days left!.

Sounds like your DS14 has not only good, but great, choices. My DD wouldn’t consider small schools - for her the bigger the better. She LOVED UCSB, but they don’t have football (silly, I know), 3 to a dorm room, only Econ major & she wants Business (may not go to grad school), and we would be full pay OOS tuition. Yikes! Oh, but the weather & the campus & location - can’t be beat! You are right - she could care less about rankings. I liked U of AZ, but we saw it last year when all the grass on the mall was dead & brown, so the visual appeal was lacking. Honors there is a nice perk, plus she got great scholarship $$, but I think it’s off the list. Hard to really figure out what these kids are thinking sometimes. Good luck with your DS14’s great choices.

Englishman, I also meant to ask why you would run from Georgia & Wisconsin? How are they in the last century? Something I don’t know about?

At ASU the grass never dies because they have underground drip irrigation. When it’s running you have to be careful where you step or your feet get wet. I was fascinated by this the first time we were there. Funny short fine grass and beautiful flowers and unusual botanical specimens everywhere. Orange trees of sme kind with tiny oranges on them, not sure if edible. And cactus gardens too, but my goodness, the miles and miles of hose they must have. I just couldn’t believe they had grass there. Maybe not very environmentally PC, but at least they aren’t spraying the water in the air. Solar panels on the parking lot roofs and some buildings.

…Um, UW is awesome, what the heck??? They put up new buildings all the time. New dorms, new business school, new performing arts center going up soon. Construction everywhere you look.

Thanks so much, celesteroberts. We saw the ASU campus about a year ago & were amazed at the oasis in the desert. Lovely, it was.

Question re U of AZ? Is the grass on the mall still dead, or is it nice and green. Is the crazy construction in the area completed? Last year everything was completely torn up. My DD, after practically committing to Ohio State (but also considering ASU/Barrett) is starting to think U of AZ (honors/business) again, mainly b/c she might try out for their dance team. Any thoughts are much appreciated.

@crazymom, apologies this from a crazy raging european liberal, having spent time in the south(ATL) and having friends from Wis, I have no interest in ever visiting least of all sending my children to school there, my comment refers to local politics, no disrespect to anyone living there.

Regards UofA in Az we lay winter grass seed/overseed, thus when the summer grass goes dormant in October the new winter grass is growing and does so through April, when you cut it back and the summer grass comes through, Yes I was on the Mall last weekend and yes is green.
Like elsewhere, so much construction if not dorms (@UA), most recently rebuilding half the football stadium. Uof A honors is not Barrett ASU, for one its smaller, Arbol dorms on the SW corner of campus is almost a community on its own, UA honors is $500 pa vs I think $1K at ASU (makes little diff), my DS 14 also admitted to UA honors but as I said will likely go OOS.
You might not need to ever venture too far, dance is a very good major, I have a gf who’s D graduates this year in Dance from UA, if you want I could put you in touch although I think she is hoping to move into Drama after graduation. UofA business you have to apply to after sopho spring it’s not guaranteed to get in, Eller is a great school, I did Ex-Ed there some years ago and many of my DS11 Fraternity after in Eller.

Hello Crazymom1: I haven’t been on this site in a while but I may have info that can offer you some insight into OSU. If your daughter decided to attend OSU, she won’t be disappointed. My older daughter is a Junior at OSU, president of one of the largest sororities on campus, in the Honors College, involved in research with the OSU dental school and utilizing many of the wonderful scholarships offered to her. She just returned from her first study abroad experience in Europe and is off to South American next winter. She loves her college experience! From Buckeye Football, to sorority events, to the beautiful campus, to excellent advising, to the very friendly students, Ohio State will not disappoint.

My son received excellent scholarship offers to ASU, U of A and a host of other universities across the country. He has always wanted to go west so we took a trip out to ASU and U of A plus several California schools. He only wants to attend large schools with D1 sports, many majors and lots of opportunities. Both ASU and U of A offered these things. After touring both schools, he opted for ASU. Both schools are beautiful but Tucson wasn’t as appealing to him as Tempe. Believe it or not, U of A’s lack of dining halls bothered him. He felt that ASU was more cutting edge in its facilities. Ultimately, he just felt more comfortable at ASU.

We are thrilled with his choice! We are hopeful he has an amazing experience at ASU and that it provides him with a similar variety of experiences as those offered to our daughter. As for college rankings, from this OOS mom’s perspective, U of A and ASU are so similarly ranked that there really is not a difference. OSU is, of course, ranked much higher than both but if your daughter is more comfortable at ASU or U of A, she will surely have a wonderful educational experience at either school. Good luck to your daughter and to you!
