Ohio State Scholars or ASU Barrett Honors - need to decide quick

D is trying to decide between The Ohio State & ASU/Barrett Honors program. At Ohio State, she got direct admit to Fisher College of Business/Marketing (she may switch to Supply Chain Mgt) & in the Int’l Affairs Scholars program which I think puts her in Smith-Steeb dorm (nice). At ASU she got into Barrett Honors College, WP Carey Business School/Marketing. She likes both campuses a LOT, cost is the same for both with merit scholarships (she’s OOS). Her concerns about Ohio State are winter weather, not getting into the intl affairs scholars dorm, off campus housing may be not so great, sheer size of campus, Greek life may not be vibrant. Her concerns about ASU are HOT weather in Sept & April/May, poor reputation of ASU in general, Tempe in general, Greek life may not be great, school spirit is questionable. She loves Ohio State’s school spirit, but is very concerned she may not be able to get the football package b/c freshman are last on the list.

Any suggestions on deciding would be much appreciated. I’m also going to post in ASU forum.

The recruiting abilities at ASU for SCM are astounding-- they have one of the best undergrad Supply Chain Management programs out there. Tempe is a vibrant city, and Greek life is quite accessible to all those who would like to join. As for reputation, being in Barrett helps boost it somewhat, especially in a highly sought after major like hers.

Gah. The two choices are about even IMO. It comes down to which one she likes the best. Flip a coin.

Thanks for the input. Any other input on ASU’s or OSU’s school spirit/football spirit, weather, college life in general? D wants the “full” college experience.

ASU weather- September is awful. We’re from upper Midwest so it was a concern. But it’s worth it for my D at least. Spring semester is finished 5/9. It just started getting hot there last week, but it’s not as bad as September because it still gets down to 60 at night. I wouldn’t worry too much about April/May. It’s September that is the killer. The buildings are all cold though so need to dress in layers during the hot time, adding them when one gets inside for class, and shedding clothes outside.

If your daughter got International Affairs Scholars she Will be in the dorm where they are housed, in this case Smith Steeb. My son will be a Scholar living in Smith Steeb next year. My daughter just finished her first year at OSU and loved it! She had no problem getting football tickets and even was able to score student Basketball
tickets… You really have to pay attention to the windows of opportunity to sign up for these tickets and do it as soon as you are able. My daughter also rushed and joined a sorority. It’s true that Ohio State does not have a huge greek community but there are about 15 National sororities and the total greek community has probably
over 3500 students. Columbus is a large city with over 1 million people in the area so there is a lot to do and
the university while being huge does a great job getting people involved and making them feel home on campus. Off campus housing is getting much better with new student apts being built very close to Fisher
College and High St. Ohio is obviously going to have colder weather and this past winter was crazy cold
but winters are usually not nearly as bad as this past. Columbus gets some snow but I wouldn’t say a ridiculous amount and the campus clears it pretty fast. You can not beat Ohio State for school spirit. Football Saturdays are the best and nothing beats a sunny Fall day walking on the Oval or near Mirror Lake! Being an alumni myself, I still get excited when I visit. My husband and I traveled to the Cal Berkeley game last fall and went to an Alumni event in San Francisco that had over 4000 alumni in attendance…Buckeyes are vast across the country and safe to say we are Buckeyes for life! Good luck to her wherever she goes!

osufan13, thanks so very much for the great info. Just what I wanted to hear. At this point, she’s fully decided on OSU, and is extremely excited about everything! We visited Columbus recently & she loved it, and especially loved the OSU campus. I think the football spirit, beautiful autumn, and general wonderfulness of the school won her over. Looking forward to her being a Buckeye for Life!

So glad to hear that she chose Ohio State! It’s an exciting time for your family I’m sure! My daughter just finished her freshman year last week and now I’m getting my son ready for graduation from high school and them off to Ohio State also! I’m sure she’ll love it! Go Bucks!

Isn’t it nice to have that decision made?! Now you can start buying the Ohio State t-shirts and sweatshirts and water bottles and…

Hope these kids can stay focused and get through graduation now!

DD proudly wore her OSU t-shirt to school today! Apparently, she’s the only person in her entire high school of 2000 kids to have gone to OSU in the past 6-7 years. Here’s to her for breaking new ground! So excited to be a Buckeye!

Good for her! She knows a good school when she sees it! Next up is graduation and then orientation on the 10th of June!
