ASU/Barretts - International Student - Urgent Help

UI won’t likely accept the OP with her SAT of 1570. I doubt GT would either. I don’t know enough about VT, but that could be questionable, too.

The SAT score is going to hurt at schools that require SAT for int’ls. It will also hurt her at schools that require certain stats to get into their colleges of engineering.

She needs to apply to schools that have good engineering programs that will accept her and that don’t require high stats to get into Engineering.

^Sounds like Purdue. One thing to be concerned about: engineering programs at large shools can be a real sink or swim proposition.

Again , I am just a day dreamer . I watched THE O.C. and since then owning a house in Cal Has been my dream . I have not yet applied to any schools . Utah and Kansas are just on a budding list of mine.

Where would I fit in ? . I am actually good with studies but my SAT score is definitely a setback and the ACT is not offered even close to the place/city/state I stay in and due to the incoming Final exams , I cannot risk leaving .

My main criteria is a good education (I prefer small classes , group discussions , well known faculty) , a bit well known ( a good city/state with good engineering firms with the area to provide good internships) , good opportunities , a good student body ( a good area for student life , something to just blow off the steam) FOR ENGINEERING . Please suggest 1-2 matches. I am not interested in applying to Illinois , GT and UMich and getting rejected (I know it sounds harsh … but I just don’t want to get my hopes up and then not get in) .

Thanks for all your support and suggestions.

I understand that in India, the official language of instruction is English. If so, I am not sure if college admission officers will give you a benefit of doubt on your low SAT scores as a foreign student.

Your SAT scores are a definite deal breaker in many schools. Perhaps you are a good student who are having problems with standardized testing. Perhaps you took SAT without any preparation, not even an at home practice test. If that’s the case, you might want to get some intensive help on “test taking tips and tricks”. You still have time to take January test. You will have close to two months to practice. Though it’s past the deadline for most highly competitive institutions, I understand many good schools will still consider Jan results. Especially if the early low SAT scores are really not a true reflection of your capabilities but rather a result of complete unfamiliarity with the test formats and such, colleges will look at your Jan scores as a correction, if you also send a letter explaining the situation.

This advice does not apply if your low test scores are not a reflection of test format, etc, but a reflection of the lack of fundamental concepts and such.

Good luck.

Thanks for replying . But I guess time is what I do not have . I have my term exams in December and my Pre-board examinations in January and 1 month of Feb is left (which will be a full time study month as I have my grade 12 Board exams in March) .

What are my options now ? . With my present SAT score ?

Right; that’s my point. You don’t know anything about California other than what you have seen on TV, which is NOT realistic. Re-read the post from Wis75 above. He has suggested some very appropriate schools for someone interested in engineering with your level of scores.

Apply to ASU and if you don’t get into Barrett, work your way in – which you can probably do, with really good grades and good recs, esp. from your freshman English teacher.

Utah actually has a pretty good science/engineering reputation in the West (and apparently elsewhere, if the 1995 NRC rankings are any guide).

*Re-read the post from Wis75 above. He has suggested some very appropriate schools for someone interested in engineering with your level of scores. *

Which schools does Wis75 suggest? I’m not seeing any. Are they listed on another thread or am I missing them?

Sorry - I meant the ones you suggested, and then follow the advice in Wis75’s post :-)

I’ve heard others on the board say good things about engineering at Santa Clara University, a private California school located near Silicon Valley. Won’t be as hard to get into as Umich and may be more on the lookout for full-pay foreign students.

^^^

Santa Clara has become a reach for MOST students - except for those with very high stats.

I looked up Santa Clara’s freshman profile of the class of 2012. 50% ranges for GPA and SAT testing were:

GPA: 3.4–3.8
Critical reading: 550-650
Math: 570-680
Admission rate: 58%

I think that OP’s stats are in the ballpark except for the VERY low CR score 440.

Of course, maybe things changed drastically for the Class of 2013 and things got very competitive for last year’s applicants.

My H is from India (sorry folks, I’m a girl, too- thanks for the compliment on my earlier post) and it may turn out best with your stats to get your undergrad degree from one of the good Indian schools and then apply for a grad degree here. You may get into a better local school and get better training there than at some of the US schools you could get into. Engineering is not our field so I can’t give specific suggestions.

Note the admission rate for Santa Clara… 58%. They are rejecting more than 4 out of 10 applicants. And…they give preference to students who graduate from Catholic high schools. That accounts for some of the lower mid 50 SATs. It is hard to get into, when stats aren’t high and you aren’t graduating from a Catholic school.

But, you make a good point about being a full-payer. SCU is need aware.

It’s a lovely campus. I have a nephew who will hopefully be going there next year. He is graduating from a Catholic high school, so he’s got a bit of help.

Only on CC would a 58% admission rate seem like they are letting everyone in! :)

^^^

NO!!! My point was that Santa Clara ISN’T letting everyone in. My point was that SCU has become a reach for many.

There are kids (like my nephew) with 29 ACTs and 3.8 GPAs that are hoping that they’ll be accepted. These kids can’t consider SCU as a safety or even a match anymore. And, their stats are much better than the OP’s.

mom2ollegekids–post #36 is meant to be a joke–since many of the colleges that CC kids are desirous of attending have acceptance rates below 10%.

ahh!

The thing is…for many “non-ivies” - there is a self-deselection that goes on with the app process. Many kids don’t even bother to apply to certain strong non-ivies because they assume they won’t get accepted. So, those schools get less apps, therefore they actually accept more students - percentagewise.

The ivies (and similar elites) are a different story, since many kids who have the stats get rejected.

I am also planning to apply to University of Washington - Seattle . They do not require SAT from international students. What are my chances over there ?

Can you people tell me something about the university ? … with respect to engineering ?
