hey i am only a commended student, and i have already made it into ASU, but i was wondering about my chances as an out of state student at Barrett. I heard they are pretty brutal with their out of state students if they are not national merit scholars.

Here is a numerical summary of me:

SAT (super scored): 2300, 740cr, 800,m, 760 wr.
GPA (unweighted): 3.6
GPA (weighted): 4.6
AP scores: Ap calc AB 5, Ap Stat 5, Ap english lang: 4
I take all ap classes as a senior.

However my PSATs are at a 213, and does not meet my states requirements for a semifinalist.

Qualitatively:

I am an American citizen with a dual citizenship from Turkey. I was born in Turkey and lived 11 years there. I have been living in the East coast now for about 6 years. I speak Turkish and english very fluently and have taken 4 years of spanish classes as well. I have some ok ECs such as some volunteer hours with NHS and a constant involvement in cross country and track for four years, along with spanish club.

However my essay is weak and i do not have the time to make it much better. I think.

I am going for a physics degree.

Another question for anyone at ASU from a low-income family. (especially for out of state). Where you guys able to receive a sufficient financial aid? (aka loan free or very minimal loans and only paying EFC)

No, they really aren’t brutal at least not from my S’s experience, similar situatuation to you with a 213. By comparison his GPA was higher but his superscored SAT 1 was lower. He was offered a scholarship half that of the NMSF’s. You definitely have a shot. I don’t know about this year but last year the Barrett application deadline was much later than most other schools. I mention that because I would expect that your opportunities for both admission and scholarships will be better if you don’t turn in an essay that you believe is weak. If the deadlines are the same as last year, IMO you really should make an effort to write an essay that you believe is good.

I understand. I will have to talk to my parents and tell them i will not be sending it in by December 1st like they want me to. it’s time to rewrite the essay.

If possible though, could you tell me your son’s experience with the FA.

i was hoping that a significantly higher SAT score from the PSAT would maybe shoot me into the similar scholarship range as of the NMSFs.

I don’t know about FA, after the scholarship was awarded he didn’t qualify for it. I want to clarify what I stated before. All of this is based on what I remember from last year so please check the school’s deadlines, they may have changed and I could be remembering incorrectly. ASU had separate applications for ASU general admission and for Barrett. You had to be accepted to ASU general admission before getting a Barrett acceptance. The ASU application, according to my son was the easiest ap he filled out. I think this needed to complete by a much earlier deadline than Barrett’s in order to be considered for scholarships. Whatever the scholarship deadline is you don’t want to miss it but the Barrett ap didn’t have to be completed by that deadline. I believe that it was the Barrett ap that had the essay not the general admission ap. I don’t know if the Barrett ap affected scholarships, but it is used for the Barrett admission decision, so again, IMO you should not turn in what you believe is a weak essay, especially if there is time to do better. My S submitted his Barrett ap. only shortly before the deadline and was accepted. With regard to the scholarship, there was the NMSF scholarship and the highest scholarship you could earn without one which was half the NM offer. There was some sympathy for my S’s situation and some interest expressed in changing award levels, but in his case no additonal scholarship money was made available. I hope you do better with that this year. He ended up choosing another school and it turned out great for him. Good Luck.

I honestly wouldn’t stress TOO much about the essay-it’s mostly to see if you have decent writing skills. From your high AP English score, and your high SAT, I wouldn’t be that worried. However, that being said, as long as you have already gotten into ASU, you have plenty of time to fix it if you are not satisfied, 181818 is right. ASU does do scholarships with a priority deadline of December 1st, but if you’ve already been admitted, then they will automatically consider you for scholarships.

I’m in-state, so I’m not sure if it’s the same (although I’m pretty sure it’s similar), but there is a pretty significant difference between NMS/NHS/NAS scholarships and regular recruitment ( the most you can be considered for is $9,000 vs the $15,000 you get for being a national scholar). That being said, there are TONS of supplementary scholarships you can apply for. The tour guide at ASU told us a story about her friend who was a white male, who applied for a scholarship that he didn’t realize was for hispanic women. But since he was the only one who applied for it, they gave it to him anyway. So, moral of the story is, if you really want to go to ASU, there are ways to do it if you keep looking. Barrett also has a couple small scholarships that you can apply for if you get in, and I’m sure that there will be a couple scholarships designated for whatever college physics is in as well. Good luck!

thanks guys. I dropped in a call and it seems my barrett app has nothing to do with scholarships so i don’t have to rush that, i have until march! I will submit it anyway within a few days but i already got into ASU so my FA will be decided by that.

Also thanks for the helpful hints on scholarships . I believe they actually extended a lot higher scholarships out this year, but I also have financial need to supplement any merit based awards i might receive. So hopefully i will be able to afford this college…

Finally, my essay is coming along quite nicely thanks to very impressive help of my english teacher and the suggestions by my parents. I am no longer worried. I will post though once i receive my scholarship notifications and update you guys or anyone that is wondering. (unless it says something to not share it…)
