ASU CS or Purdue Undecided?

Hi there all, I would appreciate help with my predicament. I was accepted into ASU Computer Science and given an offer for no tuition because I am a National Merit Finalist. The only other school that accepted me was Purdue, which accepted me into their Exploratory with no financial aid. I know ASU has given me the best offer I can possibly ask for, but my family (who is paying for at least half of my education) strongly pushes me to go to Purdue because they believe a Purdue degree in any sort of engineering is better than an ASU degree. I’m really not sure what to do because while I would love to go to Purdue, there’s a significant risk that I may just be denied transfer to CS or any related major, which would be heartbreaking for me. Its also worth noting that if I did go to ASU, my parents would likely also be able to financially assist me with getting my Masters while this would not be a possibility with Purdue. Do I choose a secure major from a good school or take my chances on a great school? Thank you for any advice you have.

There is no guarantee that you will get into CS or engineering at Purdue. Go where you have a direct pathway into the major you want. Congrats on having an amazing opportunity at ASU!

It’s almost a no-brainer in this case.

Agreed - and btw - ASU engineering is strong. It does not have the historical reputation of Purdue. My kid turned down Purdue to go to Alabama - if that comforts you. ASU > Alabama. Yes, it was $20K a year cheaper but he chose Alabama, not me…based on the dorms. He’s got a great job this Summer at an automotive manufacturer (his dream role). You could go to I never heard of you college - and you’re going to get a job with that major. And after your first job, your school loses relevance.

Unless your parents are Warren Buffet, save their cash. Purdue is great - but ASU is very well respected - and you will have lots and lots of opportunities. If you got into Barrett, that’s a bonus as well.

Have you looked at the ASU Class of 2025 thread?

I don’t know how to link, but a parent just posted about their student’s experience. Said student is getting strong opportunities. Also, ASU is a T10 feeder into Silicone Valley.

I think sometimes us older folks’ opinion of ASU is based on the school it used to be, instead of the school it is today. It’s transformed a lot in 20 years. We ran into into the same thing personally, but have been more and more impressed the more we have learned about ASU and Fulton.

My D is deciding between paying more for ASU/Fulton/Barrett and UNC (in-state) because of the direct admit factor (for BME). Her hesitation with ASU is mainly distance (and a little bit the heat), but we all feel good about the programs and opportunities there. If she’d wanted to go further away for college from the start, I think she would already have decided for ASU at this point.

Go to ASU.

ASU because it is unlikely that you will be able to study CS at Purdue.
