Any feedback on the ASU direct entry to BSN program would be appreciated.
Website claims all that is needed is a 3.3 GPA and 24 ACT but that seems really low since nursing is competitive across the nation. Maybe they accept a lot? Apparently, if students don’t keep a 3.5 GPA in the first two years, they are dropped. IN CA, need a 4.1 GPA for SDSU.
ASU is rolling admissions. Is it too late to apply now for fall? Nursing dept. or admissions could not answer that question.
How is living downtown?
How are the dorms?
How is the dining hall?
Would like to return to Northern CA to work. Any advice? What is the ASU nursing program reputation?
Where is the hospital that students attend in comparison to downtown? Is it far?
Are the classes the same classes that pre-med students attend? Is it equally rigorous as pre-med classes or “nursing” classes?
Are merit scholarships available?
Pros and cons of ASU nursing direct entry program?
How does ASU’s nursing program compare to U of AZ’s besides that UA is not direct entry?
ASU claims 97% pass the NCLEX but someone mentioned something about the data being skewed by colleges.
My daughter has a kind and caring personality. Does this even matter? They are only looking at GPA and standardized tests. We are open to looking at other nursing direct entry programs too.
Hi,
I will try and help based on my research. My daughter has been accepted to ASU nursing for Fall 2019 and it is one of her top choices. I am not sure the criteria for acceptance but my daughter got in with a 27 ACT and 3.8GPA (lots of APs, volunteering, hospital hours, etc… ) and yes they do need to keep gpa at 3.5 to stay in program. We are from CA as well and she plans to return to CA after graduation. She received a very nice merit scholarship which makes attending ASU the same as SDSU, a school she would have loved to go to except for the very low acceptance rate for the nursing program. If your daughter is interested I would suggest she apply, as the decision for us came quickly. We visited the downtown campus and it is very nice, dorm rooms are newer, dining hall is small but lots of places to eat near campus. There is a ton of security on campus since the campus is right downtown. The program does have a good reputation and good facilities. The beauty of direct admit is once you are in, you are in and the program is very collaborative. Students aren’t competing against each other for the few coveted upper division spots, they work together so they all progress to the upper division classes together. My daughter loves the school spirit of ASU, she can attend school sporting events and join a sorority but at the end of the day will be on the downtown campus which is filled with dedicated nursing, journalism, law, and upper division students that are serious about their studies. I have emailed the administration several questions and they have been super responsive. They have given us names of students enrolled in nursing so we can ask questions about classes, dorms, etc. and they have been GREAT! My daughter has also applied/been admitted to other schools but my hope is she will choose ASU! I think it is a great fit for her.
My DD was accepted to ASU as well for nursing; we are from California, too. It was her top choice as of recent, but then her acceptance to Azusa Pacific just came today. Now she is going to have to make a choice. Any advice would be great!
Hi @EngTchrMom . I hear great things about Azusa Pacific and the location in So. Cal is great. My daughter has several friends that have been accepted and they are considering as well. The religious aspect wasn’t for my daughter so she didn’t apply. I would suggest a visit to both campuses. When we visited ASU my D felt at home. Hopefully your daughter will feel the same at the best school for her!
Good news, it only took two weeks for admission acceptance into ASU Nursing! With the merit scholarship, tuition is just a tad more than attending a UC! And my daughter just booked a suite in Taylor Place (dorm) too. See you there! @LollieW Thanks again for the info!
@JessiesGirl great news!! I am glad she applied. Make sure your daughter goes on the Devil2Devil app in her ASU portal. That is where students can chat with incoming students in their same major, find a roommate, etc… We are going to orientation the last week in March. There is also 2 mother’s groups on Facebook - ASU Moms and ASU Sun Devil Momz, join and you will get a ton of valuable information about everything from housing, to things to do in the area, to best advice when moving into the dorms.
@LollieW Thank you for the tips about the FB groups, the moms are so helpful! Someone even volunteered to store a stranger’s items during the summer!
We attended the March 30 ASU Nursing Orientation/Class registration and of the 3 college orientations I have attended for my children (private schools + U of AZ), ASU’s was definitely the best! We felt like they really care about our students. While most orientations aren’t informative, ASU really hit it out of the ballpark in every aspect! From the people at the booths to the people on campus directing visitors where to go, to the speakers, everything was wonderful (and it’s hard to impress me). ASU move-in day sounds like U of AZ, where they give you 15m to park and have someone help load a huge bin and move it up to the dorm room along with you—it’s flawless. Other colleges do not do this and move-in day is painful. ASU seems so good with systems/procedures—maybe it’s their military influence?
The students were nice and had good social skills and there is diversity, which makes everyone more open-minded.
And the Phoenix downtown location is wonderful! Chefs at great restaurants, AMC theatre across from Taylor Place, Nursing building next to dorm, dining hall on bottom level of dorm, concert hall with big entertainers, and a 20-minute free shuttle to the Tempe campus for free football games. All the boxes are checked for us, we’re so excited for my daughter!
@JessiesGirl we were there for the 3/30 orientation too! I agree it was great. This is my first going to college, so glad to hear how it compares to others. I sent you a private message on this site, maybe we can get our daughters to “meet” before school starts. The more friends they have the better. Is your daughter going to camp CONHI? I have heard that is a must do.
