Hello, I am looking for a comparison beetween the Arizona State University and the University of Michigan. Can someone tell me what are the differences ?
Thank you very much for your answers and have a wonderful day !

One is in Arizona, the other is in Michigan?

Ever hear of this amazing thing called the internet? It’s just crazy, you enter in a topic which interests you, and you get back more information than you can shake a stick at! Incredible, right?

Come on, you have do some basic research here… check out their websites and then come back with some specific questions.

Yeah I’ve heard about that. And if I’m posting here it is exactly because I haven’t found anything on this amazing tool called internet. And thank’s I know my geography. Maybe it’s because my English’s bad but I was looking for a better answer : about the athmosphere, the people, the life etc… Is it hard to answer that ? I hope it isn’t. And no more joke please if I wanted to hear some I wouldn’t be on this site. Thank you !

One you can get into with a 2.5 and the other you can’t be sure to get in with a 4.0.

Well are you interested in Barrett at all? What are you looking for in a school?

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

I’m looking for :

-a good athmosphere in and out of the campus
-friendly people
-nightlife, partys
-a university where a progressive atheist like me would feel accepted
-a good social life
etc…

Which one is better ? Thank you very much !

Both have that… The big difference is the academic level of the average student and of the lowest-achieving students (the top students at ASU are in Barrett and they’re similar to top students at Michigan, but if you’re not in Barrett the situation is totally different).
That’s why someone asked about Barrett: someone considering UMichigan wouldn’t consider ASU unless it’d be for Barrett.
In addition, have you run the net price calculators? Are you in-state for either one?

Are you instate for one of these?

If so, does that mean that your instate school is more affordable?

What are your parents saying about paying for an OOS public? How much will they pay?

Are you an int’l? IF so, will your parents pay for either school?

what is your major and career goal?

Hello. I am a law student at the University of Lausanne (Switzerland). And I have the opportunity to go to an American university for one year. I really want to go to the Arizona state university b

Go to UMich. In the future, give us the details.

Yeah I’m actually a Swiss student who has the possibility to go to an american university for one year. My goal is to become a lawyer. Knowing this, which university should I choose ?

If you have a choice between both, choose UMichigan.
In Swiss terms, UMich has top students from the “voie gymnasiale”, whereas ASU has regular students from "voie g

I would love to return to the US for academics but I’m not rich… What makes UMich a better college for me ? Thank you very much !

ASU will have a much more laid back atmosphere (in terms of weather, west coast US vibe, etc). The campus and surroundings are far more attractive than Michigan’s IMO, and the weather during the school year is generally fantastic. Their engineering department is pretty good overall, but no where near as recognized as Michigan’s. The school itself is quite easy to get into, however some programs (like engineering) have more stringent admission requirements.

Michigan serves more of a utilitarian purpose, IMO - a “meat grinder” school where competition among students is pretty fierce. It’s a great school academically, with a school spirit that is legendary, but the level of competitiveness and somewhat dreary campus/surroundings turns some people off.

Thank you very much ! This is very useful ! I don’t like competition so I think ASU’s a good choice for me

Hm, birdwatch, I think you were just trying to find people who’d validate your choice… not asking for advice. Because you jumped on the one comment that told you to choose ASU.
Nothing wrong with that but pointing out your mind was already more than a little made up and the way you asked your question without referring your status, etc, explains this. It’s a bit annoying for posters.

If you plan to have fun, ASU will be great… but you’re in law, meaning you’ll be taking history, political science, American Studies, Government (not engineering, where everyone who isn’t hard working has been weeded out) and this, outside of Barrett. It’ll certainly be interesting and educational but don’t expect anything like the level you’re used to.

Maybe. I had not decided to go ASU before I posted this thread. It just seemed a good idea looking to your answers. I can still choose UMI but the weather is a good argument for ASU. I didn’t mean to be annoying or something. I think what will makes me choose beetween both universities is the people. How are ASU and UMich people ? This should be my last question. Thank you for everything !

ASU-dumb suntanners
UM- smart future enterprisers

Where in my comment did I tell him to choose ASU?

Just because Michigan is the more difficult school to get into out of the two listed here doesn’t automatically make it the better choice for everyone.

Sorry fractal, you didn’t say that but OP was clearly waiting for a point to use and would justify choosing ASU. Although OP says that really they were willing to consider Michigan, despite the weather.

ASU may not be an academic powerhouse at the undergraduate level especially compared to a good school like OP comes from, but yes there’s the weather, sports, a very nice campus, parties (note no one really got into that here on CC :p), the opportunity for a fun year in the sun discovering a unique part of American cutlure and who knows it may help OP prevent burn out. Or maybe OP might find UMichigan too difficult and too intimidating and will be fine with the regular junior classes at ASU. Or maybe Op hopes to use his junior year abroad to discover many clubs and get involved in all kinds of activities so a lighter academic load/level may be just what OP needs.

UM is the more academic school, but if you are coming to the US for just one year and want to have fun and enjoy good weather then by all means go to ASU.
