.. at even getting into any college?

I graduated high school in 2003, I've been in the Navy for the past 4 years, next fall I wan't to go back to college. I pretty much slid by in high school, not because I was stupid (educationaly), just didn't care at that time. Believe my class rank was somewhere at around the exact halfway spot, overall GPA might of been around a 3.0. Composite ACT score was 27 (might have to retake that though? took it in like 2001 or so).

Not looking to get into any Ivy school, right now looking at Northern Illinois University, Univ. of IL @ Urbana, Univ. of IL @ Chicago. My only choices are public colleges in the state of IL. Urbana is where I really want to go, but is also the hardest to get in from what I've read.

I know from an academic standpoint I am at a disadvantage to you 4.0GPA perfect SAT seniors coming out of high school, but would colleges even consider me since I've been out of school for 6 years by the time I would enroll? I'd be 24 years old.

i dont know anything about the schools there but i think they would take it into consideration that you have been out of high school and serving your country in the navy for four years. :) good luck.

yea i think serving in the navy is an advantage

They will certainly consider you! By the way, if you've had any A or C-School training, they might be able to transfer those credits.

Just to mention it: A 27 ACT score is quite sufficient for an applicant to those schools, but it might be beneficial to retake, though the scores you have now are quite good.

Yea they are by no means top tier schools, although Urbana seems to be pretty selective. The retaking the test is iffy, because I know I'd probably get lower if I took it since I've been out of HS for so long and thats what they test. My choices are limited to IL since I will be a veteran I get 100% tuition & fees paid for by the state (im a resident) for 4 years.

Will definatly let them look over my credits to see if anything transfers. Supposably I have like 42 credits worth of various training, but im positive a lot of it wont transfer.

I would actually study for and take the SAT this time if you're a decent test taker. Being out of high school would hurt you for the ACT, but students that have a lot of potential yet slide through high school tend to do better on the SAT, and the subjects covered on there are much more universal. You could even aim for more selective schools than what you listed if you do well.
