Atherton Hall

Hey I'm going to be living in Atherton Hall and I just wanted to know if the dorms were carpeted so I know if I should buy a rug for the room or not haha :)

We looked at them a couple of weeks ago during FTCAP and they weren’t carpeted. I think a rug of some sort would be good.

But what I can’t recall is whether there is any sort of bedside table. Will just have to wait till we get up there to see! :(

The floors aren’t carpeted.

Also, there really isn’t a bedside table. What we did is move the dresser (which is just a tall skinny stack of drawers) from out of the closet and put it next to the bed.

momwriter - I was thinking of doing that with the dresser but was afraid it would be too tall. But if it works… :)

Hey what floors are you all living on?

Does anyone know if Atherton has an elevator? (Nothing on the website)

cwryan1 - I think DS is on the first floor.

QuietType - didn’t notice any…but wasn’t really looking, either! :)

Yeah, when we were there I didn’t even think about looking for an elevator, so of course, D2 is on the 4th floor…
(Dark visions of hefting innumerable boxes, bags, hangers, odds-and-ends, bric-a-brac, rip-rap, and all other stuff(s) up a sweltering stairwell in the middle of August :frowning: )

I am an RA in Atherton Hall this coming year. There are several elevators but they are very odd the way they were put in. No one elevator will take you to the 4th floor. You have to take one up to the 2nd floor, get off, and then get on a second elevator to the 4th floor.

Well, not the news I wanted to hear, but good to know ahead of time. Thanks for the update, cw!

cwryan1 - glad to know you’ll be an RA. Makes me feel like I “know” someone up there!

Have already started sending DS’s “stuff” up to my MIL. Much easier to ship it all (or send online orders there) than to try to bring it all up on the plane.

Oh - there ARE buses that take students to/from the mall (with Bed, Bath & Beyond) - aren’t there???

No problem- yes there are buses that run between PSU and the shopping centers. I believe they cost $.

Great. I figured they would cost money…but better than “Grandma” offering to bring him whatever he needs, whenever he needs it!! ;)

cwryan1 - is Atherton the dorm with the music practice rooms? If so - how does that work? Do the students just sign up for times, or are music majors (and maybe band members  ) given priority?

This was my DH’s biggest problem trying to keep up playing in college. He wasn’t a music major, so he always got kicked out of the music practice rooms…and his trumpet playing wasn’t too popular in the dorm or his frat house!!!

The use of the rooms is free and as far as I know there is no sign-up list for it and it is more “first come, first serve.”

Thanks cwryan1! That’s what I was thinking.

I know my son will be taking lessons at the music hall and will have some access to practice time there, but the practice rooms in Atherton will certainly be more convenient for him!

What “group” will you be an RA for? Is it done by floor?

Yep, there are 1-2 “houses” per floor. I’d rather not say on here, I’ll pm you.

Understood, cwryan1!

Thanks for all your help!
