We toured Lafayette this summer with a tour guide who was an athlete. She mentioned that coaches often do not permit their athletes to join Greek life. Does anyone know if this is typical for the coaches at Lafayette? We did not meet with a coach during our visit, and have not yet been in contact with one to ask specfically. My HS student is not currently interested in Greek life and would look more favorably on Lafayette if the athletes didn’t participate. Thanks!
“coaches often” sounds like it is her coach’s preference, and maybe that of a few others. Not sure of your child’s age, but when your child starts going to recruiting events and meeting coaches, they can ask about it.
Lafayette is Division 1, so sports would be competitive in terms of recruiting, I’d suggest starting early to get on their radar.
That being said, I know at the Division 1 school I went to (similar education focus over sports focus), there were specific fraternities and sororities that catered to one or two particular sports, like wrestling or swimming. The frats would schedule their meetings around their practices and training, so conversely, a frat member who wasn’t on the team or got cut would feel left out.
I think “not interested in Greek life” will be a bit of a burden. And remember, coaches do change! My son was being recruited by a coach and he was replaced by his assistant - of course not the assistant that my son had been dealing with over email and who had complimented his play. That new coach brought in all new people and my son’s contact was gone. Diversify if your child wants to play in college (unless they are nationally ranked and can pick).
Thanks for your response. My kid will reach out to the specific coach.
