So I got my decision back from Middlebury today... deferred. I had talked to the XC coach previously about running there, although she was vague about supporting me ED. Does anyone know about whether or not XC/Track coaches have any slots to support or "protect" for RD? I was reading past forums and it seems like the football, lacrosse etc have 14 "tips" and 10 "protected," although the amount tapers off after ED1, ED2, and RD. What's the scoop with XC and Track?
Thanks!

^When you find out, please let me know! D was also deferred after talking to XC coach and expressing interest. Coach was lukewarm. I don’t know if their chosen runners all applied EDI and got in, or if they still have room for strong runners like you and D. I have got to believe that some students they recruited may not have applied EDI. Maybe there are some gaps/needs being uncovered now. Like our application strategy is constantly changing based on scores, grades, etc., maybe their recruiting strategy is always changing based on who applied, who got in, who already committed to another NESCAC.

I don’t know if they compare the deferred EDIs with the runners in the EDII or if they throw all deferred EDIs into the regular application pool. Sounds like the former because the notification date is March 26 (which I believe is before the date they notify RDs). It doesn’t help that their team was so strong this year (winning NESCACs) – I think now they can be very choosy. But when I looked at the roster, I counted 9 seniors – so maybe there’s still room.

D’s choice now is: wait for Midd or apply EDII at another NESCAC. Are you considering that also?

Not to rain on your hopes, but the XC team at Midd has long had great success and been able to be extremely picky. This year, for example, they won their SIXTH national Championship in 15 years!

I believe they have only 4 slots, and that may be for men and women…Their current team is SO strong, they don’t really need a lot of people.

EVERY team is pretty strong to be honest. I know they have actually ended up cutting lacrosse recruits in years past… so even if you get admittance, that’s not a guarantee you’re playing. They don’t have financial ties to recruits, so not sure their actually obligated to anyone. Not sure how long a coach can do that before it may start to backfire, but as long as they continue to be successful and get more talented kids interested than they need recruited, they’ll do what they’ve been doing.

If my kid was considering playing a sport, I would look for more enthusiasm from the coach for sure. Son didn’t ask enough hard questions for sure, but was admitted first vs recruited. While I don’t know what kind of support a coach gets from admission, if the academic piece is there I would definitely not want to go somewhere where I MIGHT play if I knew I really really wanted to play. And while it is indeed a “sporty” school, there aren’t many clubs or intramurals to replace the role that athletics play in a lot of kids’ life. Let’s just say, there have been trade-offs on that score in our house…

I would have very much appreciated a lot more direct responses to the questions he did ask… in retrospect, there was some hedging and we should have asked for greater clarification.

Midd coaches use all their slots on ED 1. About half the ED acceptances are athletic recruits. You might get a “tip” on ED 2 or RD, or if someone the coach slotted decided not to go you could get a “slot”. But lukewarm means they’ll tell admissions they’d like to see you, but it doesn’t really help you much, unless it is a tie between you and a non-athletic person.
I disagree on the club sports-intramural soccer is huge, so is frisbee, and of course, quiddich…

Well… what is true is that everyone has their own experience, Oldbatesie and not everyone plays or played soccer. We’ll leave the discussion at that because Frisbee, while undoubtedly popular, is about the same as quidditch when it comes to a varsity type sports. They don’t have all americans in frisbee or first team or players of the year… and if they do, it’d be news to me. But those kind of players WILL and DO get cut at Middlebury.

All I was saying was that if you really want to continue playing a varsity sport in college, at any level, make sure you have positive support from the coach and truly understand where you stand, OR make sure there are outlets for playing that you’ll be happy with or be willing to start it up yourself.

But I also know there are spots saved for athletes sometimes during EDII as well - especially if someone they want has gone ED I somewhere else but would come to Midd if been rejected ED.

``Midd coaches use all their slots on ED 1. About half the ED acceptances are athletic recruits.‘’
If they wave you off for ED1, is it game over?

Modadunn, I would hate to disagree with you and I think you misunderstood me. You have a lot more experience than I do. My totally non-athletic son played intramural soccer-he’s never played and was awful-but he had fun.I just meant that not all sport activities require skill and commitment.

And I did say that if the coach has an ED2 slot, it’s because they didn’t get someone ED1.

For d3fourme-if the coach waved you off, I wouldn’t count on being accepted as an athlete. As Modadunn says, even recruited kids get cut. There is a lot of competition for “slots” and “tips”.You’ll find more about this on the athletic recruit board under College Admissions

D3fourme - Definitely depends on the competitiveness of the sport and size of the team, but I agree with the above for the most part. However, you can call the coach or better yet, have your coach call the coach if you feel you had a reasonable conversation to begin with. Our AD spoke with a number of college coaches following an EDI rejection for S. There were no tips left, but what was also true is that S was a very attractive student first. So, if your stats need the boost by some kind of coach support, your odds are probably not great to get that. BUT here’s something else… the ED rejection was also followed by a call from that school’s coach following a rejection of 2 of his tipped ED recruits!! So you just never know what happened without that phone call to ask if their rosters are really buttoned up.
