I know Middlebury has a top ranked cross country team. My S is considering applying RD. He has a 16:02 5k, only run 3 seasons, and a 9:37 3200M time. He is applying ED to a top state school but with no support from coach b/c he is just breaking into D1 times. He likes the smaller, NESCAC schools. He has a 34 ACT and 4.1 W GPA. We are waiting to hear back from state school but wanted to get a feel if he would have a shot on the team for Middlebury. He wants to run but I know the D3 schools, especially NESCAC, also have top-notch runners. I have also read on some older threads that the coaches use their slots for ED and may not have any slots at RD. I don't know if this is true. Thanks in advance.

vahockey, You might want to consider PM’ing OldBatesieDoc who had at least one son who was a recruited athlete. She’s a great resource although regrettably she seems less active these days on CC.

My guess is that with those kinds of stats your son won’t even need athletic support at most state schools or were you hoping for a D1 scholarship? Best of luck in his college search!

Thanks, Karate Dad! We just got the word he was accepted at William and Mary! While he wants to run in school, it was more important to find the right academic and school fit for him. A lot of other VA schools were just too big for him. I would prefer D3 b/c it allows the athlete to focus on academics. W&M is D1 so he will try walkon. Thanks again!

Congrats vahockey! 16:02 is a very good time. He should be able to drop enough to walk on at W&M or compete at DIII. (Of course, they run a little longer than 5k at college). Best of luck to him.
