Athletic Scholarship??

I have a friend who swears that he was accepted into Harvard with a full scholarship this past week. He is a basketball player (6'8) and has decent potential to be really good. But would Harvard give him a full scholarship even though he has a 1750 SAT and B/B+ grades? Im happy for him, but very suspicious.....

Harvard does not offer merit-based scholarships of any kind, not athletic or academic. All aid they issue is need-blind, so if is going to receive free tuition is family must have an income of under $60,000/per annum.

His dad is a doctor making $500,000plus a year. So there is no way he got money?

Those scores would pretty much guarantee rejection. Basketball alon wouldn't get him in.

Your friend is a liar.

none of the ivies give any sort of merit scholarship. people meet my son and say, "you're the one that got a football scholarship to ______ aren't you" and he just replies "yes, i play football at ________" it's not worth explaining that they don't give athletic scholarships.

most kids want to say they received a scholarship because it seems to indicate that they were recruited. a few articles were written about my son when he signed a "commitment" letter and sometimes they said things like "he will not be receiving a scholarship" and that would bother me because it implied he wasn't recruited, he was just "walking on" when in fact, they don't give scholarships to anyone!

your friend should just say he's been recruited and accepted--anyone that knows anything about ivy sports will know he's telling a tale if he says he got a full ride!
