Athletics at Centre?

We heard from someone who went to Centre that they were disappointed by promises made by their coach in the admissions process. Once the student got to Centre he realised that the opportunity to play in his sport wasn’t what he thought it was going to be. Anyone hear of anything like that at Centre before?

I would just say be careful. As a DIII school without the benefit of athletic aid all bets are off. Daughter #1 (graduated Centre in 08) committed to play a fall sport at Centre. During the summer found out that 8 freshman were offered positions (this is addition to the existing players). Once on campus, was told that the 8 freshman would “try out” for spots with only 3-4 actually making the team. Apparently there weren’t enough uniforms for all the girls (!!). The others would be used as practice players.

Fortunately, because there was no athletic aid, she suffered no consequences when she decided not to play.

The coach was gone by the end of that year. I understand the current coach to be much better but daughter #2 chose a different school (DII) much because of her sister’s experience with DIII athletics.

Do you think it was Centre in particular or D3 in general?

I think it depends on the philosophy of the DIII coach. Centre’s swim team was good as was soccer. Volleyball, not so much. If the coach/school is competitive then I think you can expect that they will recruit to compete and not just fill up the roster. Oberlin’s volleyball team has a great coach and a very competitive program. Suwanee, not as much. Just do the research. I really think it depends on the coach of the sport…ask the right questions.
