How is handling athletics and academics at Pomona? Does playing varsity sports get in the way of studying?
Also, how understanding are the coaches of needing to study?
Of course deferring to any current student, but based on my Pomona kid’s experience as a 4-yr athlete: If you’ve been recruited, the coach already knows that you’ve figured out how to balance academics with HS/club/travel team commitments. The coaches tell you the times you should avoid scheduling classes and labs, but that is generally only in-season (unlike DI). Depending on the sports, during off-season athletes seem to continue training/lifting, etc. on their own or in groups or they compete in complementary sports (XC/Track). I don’t think athletics ever “got in the way” for my PK, but - particularly with study-abroad and pre-professional school pre-reqs - they definitely required time management and class-planning, which I think many athletes will tell you is actually a big plus.
Hey @jojolee36 , I concur with @otisp , my child found athletics and academics very doable. There were some challenges about labs late in the day for the folks on the Pre-Med tract, but for most it was a non issue.
My child actually benefited from participating in a sport as far as her studies went…It gave her a very tangible structure in which to study. Great questions, and best of luck!
