Athletics between dorms

Can someone give some details on this? Like how competitive the games are, or if anybody can play any sport regardless of talent, or if there is a limit to how many sports you are allowed to participate in, etc.

Also are they sometimes too time consuming?

Football and baseball you would definitely have to try out for. I think there are A, B and C teams for basketball so more people can play. Apparently hockey takes all comers. And for other sports it's generally more low key, although there are a lot of people who are good athletes so competition can get rather intense.

For hockey, do the dorms have to pay for the ice time or is it provided by the university? As we all know most college students are dead broke.

If you want to practice for hockey you would need to pay for ice time. But, for the games, it is provided by the University (you play in the JACC)

Also, even if you had to pay for the ice time, the dorm would most likely cover it. And guys dorms especially have a lot of money for stuff like that (from fine money).

How great is the Bookstore Basketball Tournament? Does pretty much everyone participate?

There is a girls only tournament and a guys + girls tournament. Not sure on the exact numbers of the girls only tournament, but the main tournament has about 650 teams or so every year. So, that is about 3,250 people or so participate. There are a lot of people participating who are undergrads, staff members, professors, maintenance people, law students, priests (I know Monk Malloy used to play a while back), so pretty much every demographic of person associated with the University is represented.

It's the largest 5-on-5 basketball tournament in the world.

In the bookstore you can buy a signed photo of Lou Holtz guarding Tim Brown in a bookstore game
