To a candidate with mediocre grades, in comparison to other candidates, how important are athletics

If you're wondering if one will offset the other, the answer is "maybe", but I wouldn't bet a lot on the probabilities.

I suppose the best thing you can do to help us give you a better answer is to define "mediocre" and "athletics" in YOUR particular case. ;)

Welcome aboard. :)

In high school I took numerous Honors and AP courses in Math, Science, and English. My unweighted gpa was a 3.4. My SATs are a 580m and a 630v. On the athletic end, I played JV soccer 9th grade, Varsity soccer 10, 11, 12th grade. I was captain my senior year. I also played for a premier soccer club throughout my four years of high school. I ran one year of varsity track 12th grade and won states in the 3200m relay. My team and I were awarded All-State and All-America. I also hold school records in the 3200m relay and 1600m relay. I'm not sure if my athletic credentials will help boost my chances for an appointment.

Well, I was no jock, so I must answer this second-hand, but I HAVE heard that one way to help your chances is to be recruited by one of Navy's coaches. If you have a particular sport you would want to pursue on the Varsity level, I'd call the Academy and speak to the coach of that team.

I had a profile that was MAYBE a little better in academics (not by much, though), less in sports, but I also had a lot of other ECA's. I ended up at NAPS, which I consider a good thing.

Still, the best way to find out is to apply and let the chips fall. :)

Thanks for your help

My pleasure. Go get 'em. :)

stratto- what do you run the 1600 relay in?

stratto: you might want to consider retaking the SATs again and trying to get your scores up a bit, especially math. Consider a tutor if you need to- and take practice tests- it all can help. Also, contact the coach and your BGO.

In cases where grades are too low for consideration, an offer of NAPS or the foundation program might be in the offering, especially if you have caught the interest of a coach. Consider if those programs are an option you would consider- if they are, make that known on your application, make it known to your BGO, and make it known to the coach.

Best of luck!

chillax88- i anchored our team for a 3:24.6, our 4x800 was our strongest, we ran a 7:40.06...this was all in my first year of track

navy2010- I am taking the sats again in november and I have talked to the track coach numerous times, thanks for your advice

stratto- best of luck on the SATs. Try and get as many practice tests under your belt before November....practice does make perfect, even with the SAT's!

ok thanks!!
