My Chances??

Nashville, TN
Female
4.0 GPA
I'll have 10-12 APs when I graduate..
Problem: No sports

i haven't taken the SAT yet, but from my PSAT score, it should be really high.

I'm in good physical condition, I've just never played sports really.
So I was wondering how badly that will hurt my chances..
thanks!

I'm guessing you're a junior. I haven't played any sports, but I've passed the PAE for the Naval Academy, but only because I worked out for several months. What's really important for all candidates, but especially us non-sporty candidates, is to have a strong essay, a great interview and lots and lots of ECs that show leadership experience and good moral character.

While sports is important to the academies, what's more important is to show that you're dedicated and committed to doing well and seeing through the challenge that is the academy to the end. Not playing sports hurts our chances, but having other remarkable traits will help balance out the lack of athletics.

Tha academies are interested in the whole person, and one who is physically fit enough to meet the physical requirements of the military.

You need to demonstrate your physical fitness as well as leadership and undersanding of the team concept (to subordinate personal goals and accolades in deference to those of the team) in other ways since you do not participate in sports.

Develop great community service with a club or other service organization. Look for leadership opportunities. Work with others on a group goal.

You also need to understand the physical rigors demanded of all midshipmen. The PRT (physical readiness test) is taken each semester by every midshipman, and is far more demanding than the PAE. If it is failed, the mid could face separation! It is not to be viewed lightly. Look over the PAE requirements, and see how you would fare. You may need to embark on a physical training program now in order to do well.

Also, each midshipman participates in a sport each season. It may be varsity, club, or intramurals, but you will have to be on a team. Go to the usna website and click on athletics to see the offerings.

skrzypce,

i would suggest that you at least do some sport that requires no skill watsoever, such as running. and lots of it

other than that, u look good

Definitely add the sports AND leadership! It's not enough to be involved in a ton of EC's, if you're not a leader in any of them. If you'll do that, then I think you have a good chance, provided your SAT is acceptable.

So does being female increase my chances at all?

dont count on it.

but one never knows...

=P

To be honest, it probably puts you more at risk if you've never done team sports before. Both during the application process and once there.
