ATM and banking

I checked and there are not any Bank of America ATM machines around campus. In order to have a debit card that works on campus, do we need to sign up with one of the local banks? Which one do most of the students use and what is process of doing so?

Nope. FWIW, my daughter had a debit card for her account with our local Minnesota bank (USBank) and found a cash machine in town that did not charge for cash withdrawals (machine at Lorain National Bank just off the Square). She used Obie dollars as well for the most part and never bothered to open a bank account in Oberlin. I expect it will just be an issue of whether there is a fee for ATM transactions and how much it is.

Pohaku- yes, I want to find an ATM system that will be free of charge. She will need a way of getting cash from time to time.

My D has both: a local bank card and a card with an Oberlin bank. She has part-time job on campus and gets direct deposit, so having a local card (First Merit) and local checking account comes in very handy. I also gave her a car, so she and her friends often venture out away from Oberlin. Again, an Ohio bank card works well in the malls in other counties.

Plainsman - Thank you. This is helpful. She will bring her Boston debit card and we will get her an account at school as well. She may also be working.
