do professors take attendance?? (in small classes..)

It varies, so there's no easy answer. Some professors will keep track on paper, others will merely make a mental note if you miss classes regularly, and others really don't care.

Like nope said, some do. My calc professor did every class and if you missed a quiz, you got a 0 with no chance of making it up. Surprisingly, there were still people who missed class. Even in large lectures, though, it is now possible to take attendance. Some classes use iClickers which are handheld devices that have 5 options (A-E) on them. Some profs before class could say "if you are here, hit A on your iclicker" and there is your attendance. All professors make clear their policy on attendance the first day of class. Some professors even deduct points if you skip/miss class. Attendance was 5% of my grade in Engineering Computations.
