Attending classes in fall junior year visit?

My d is a rising junior interested in an art/math dual major or joint degree. Carnegie Mellon's BSA program (5 yr BS/BFA) is high on the list. We'll be in Pittsburgh in the fall for an occasion independent of the college search, and are wondering what she'll be able to do on a campus visit to CMU.

We're just getting started here, but I think I've read that 'official' interviews - in general, nothing specific to CMU - aren't granted until second semester of junior year. Are unofficial, informational ones sometimes available?

And are juniors allowed to sit in on classes? If it's not organized by the admissions office, can arrangements be made by contacting professors directly?

It looks like your rising junior could take a campus tour or attend a Preview Session (Feb-April). Interviews, visiting classes, and overnights are open to seniors only.

I’ve known juniors who visited classes by e-mailing professors directly.

You need to contact the school directly. Different schools have different policies regarding this.

Not sure about CM specifically, but DD was able to sit in on classes at American and Syracuse during her sophomore year.

My post was based on what I could find on the CMU website. But the OP should contact them; it may be that the info is wrong or out-of-date, or that CMU is flexible.

Reporting back, just after our visit. We went on an official tour but didn’t say anything to admissions about visiting classes. D wrote directly, a couple of weeks in advance, to a math and and art professor teaching freshman classes (all the info, even class room numbers, is on the web) and they agreed to have her attend. She wrote to an officer of extracurricular club that was meeting the evening of our visit, and they also were happy to have her. So it worked out perfectly this first time out, though we realize that this may not always be the case.

Our experience has been that most colleges will bend their rule on attending class as a junior (if they have such a rule) if you are coming from far away for your visit. Admissions will usually just say “sure” and help you set it up in that case.
