Sigh. So I recently found out that I've been placed @ Solin Hall. The place looks awesome but what's gay is that it's freaking 30 minutes away from campus! That means... little accessibility to libraries, extracurricular and PARTIES! I'm thinking about requesting a hall change but I don't know if they'll really let me. First year... I wanna be able to mingle with everyone and get really well-acquainted to the campus. The idea of waking up extra early to mission doesn't quite appeal to me either. Any other in the same boat I am? Any advice? >.<

Using the term 'gay' indiscriminately in McGill and Montreal will land you a whole lot of trouble.

first of all it doesnt take 30 mins to get to campus...if u take the metro its like 15 mins max. If ur in the faculty of management....u will get to ur buildings faster than people in new rez and upper rez...

secondly its gonna be almost impossible to get a room change until about 2 monthes into year...by that time all ur friends will be in solin and its not worth changing residences..

i would stick aroung in solin...its a really good place...and u learn to live by urself

'gay'? scratches head
glad to see that will earn you trouble. ;)

c'mon solin will have it's own parties, and with the metro/bus pass we can go and explore clubs and bars in the city. really, whats the big deal about 15 minutes? you'll get used to it.

See my residence guide above for the lowdown on Solin.

Tip: I'm not one of those politically correct pansies who throws a hissy fit everytime someone says the g-word, but I suggest you grow out of using deragatory terms for homosexuals to describe crap situations when you get to McGill, just for your own benefit.

:| I apologize. I didn't mean to come off offensive with the G word... just Toronto-slang I guess.

By all counts, I'm not a gay.

It is just that Montreal is a queer friendly city, also McGill has this body for queer people. So I guess it won't be of any good for one to display homophobia.

h0n3yyyb7ly : im in solin too :( and I definitely have the exact same concerns... ahh im going to try to get it changed or maybe get an apartment with a friend who's going to concordia

veronika. i emailed them and they said to try to go on september 15th very very early in the morning bcuz there will be other ppl requesting changes too. and its first come first serve. lol but i feel better now that ive found someone in solin too =) its a small campus so i wouldn't be surprised if we bumped into each other. lol

I can’t see any benefits to it… I was pretty angry. But, I guess It’ll be kinda cool. Maybe? How many people does solin hold? Also, we’re gonna have to cook for ourselves essentially.

The good part: it costs so much less than the other residences that there’ll be more cash to throw around on other things. I just wanted to have a ‘campus feel’. I guess not anymore…

Im pretty sure it was my last choice residence too, like # 15

oh wow… I thought this was recent… haha, never mind!

Haha, it has been 3 years.

Solin is the Jewel of McGill Rez. Take it from someone who has lived there for 3 years. I would have returned for my 4th year if it wasn’t for the price. It has gone up quite a bit since I started schooling.

Solin is possibly one of best maintained properties of McGill Rez thanks to the office staff(Howard mainly). I have seen how Solin has changed in the past 3 years, new colour schemes, new beds, new mattresses, new toiletbowls, faucets and bathtubs, new appliances etc. It’s definitely a bargain for the price that you are paying for.

People do complain of Solin being far and out there but it has its perks. Far maybe but with the metro pass, Montreal becomes really accessible, cafes at cote-des-neiges, waterfront at Verdun or sorts of places that you normally wouldn’t go because of transportation problems. If one is only looking for booze, boobs and drugs then the mcgill bubble is good enough for one.

New Rez is falling apart, Upper Rez looks like some 60s Soviet communist commune. $1k+ per month for a cell with share bathroom facilties(people do wank in them) is just a ripoff.

When I first found out that I was put in Solin for this year I was disappointed because it was pretty low on my list too. After putting some thought into it and doing a little bit of research I’ve come to the conclusion that this really is a once in a lifetime experience. How many people get to live in an apartment their first year of college? The Metro pass is also a perk.

McGill website says that there are 280 students (both male and female) that live in Solin.
