Attn West Coasters: Wellesley vs Whitman?

Help! My class of 2012 daughter is (I am writing this with her permission) is still trying to decide between Whitman and Wellesley and Whitman. Older sister is 2007 Wellesley graduate, we love the school. Her heart is telling her Whitman, and to try something new, damn the prestiege...damn the endowment...we're typical east coasters, what kind of reputation does Whitman have out there?

I'm from California, so I guess I qualify.

I don't know many people who go to Whitman. I think people like it, but it's not a school I hear too much about. It's definitely less prestigious than the Claremont colleges, and even Reed. At my school, it's normally used as a back-up to those schools. I doubt the majority of Californians have heard of it, but the same could probably be said of Wellesley.

I can't comment on the actually quality, because neither I nor any of my friends looked at it, so all I have to go from is this question of prestige. As much as I love Wellesley, if your daughter has fully looked at both schools and her heart is telling her Whitman, that might be the best place for her.

She was accepted to Well., Whit, and Scripps. She decided on Wellesley, I believe, but had visited all of them. She can probably offer you some more insights.

I'm from RI. I can't tell you anything about Whitman, but as the little sister who didn't choose her big sister's college, if your D really likes Whitman, she should go.

Among those of us on the west coast aware of selective LACs, Whitman has an excellent reputation. Their only disadvantage seems to be location; if they were closer to Seattle or Portland their applications would be much higher. If the location is fine with you, there's no reason not to consider this excellent school. Prestige is important only to those who think it's important. ;)

Broetchen is correct, I chose Wellesley over Whitman. I wish I had seen this thread sooner, but what college did your daughter end up choosing?

You can't go wrong with either schools, because both of them are excellent. Personally, Wellesley seemed more exciting to me because I live in state, and the Boston environment also seemed for promising to me than Walla Walla. Wellesley also seemed to fit my academic interests more than Whitman, where Japanese is only offerred as a minor and there are no Russian courses.

However, being that your daughter is from the East Coast, the gorgeous Whitman campus with its laid back setting and interesting students might be just the thing for her.

bcongress's daughter is going to Whitman.
