What percentage of the incoming classes have expressed interest in pursuing the pre-medicine track, and of those, how many of them eventually apply to med school? And of those, how many get into med school?

I don’t have hard numbers but this is from my observations here at USF over the years:

1st year: at least 40-50% of students tell me they are biomed majors. This is from asking all the new people I met my first two semesters
Apply to med school: less than a 1/4 of the above number
Accepted: less than the above number

Point being, everyone and their parents want them to be MD’s. However, it is simply not practical. My advice is that if you can’t nail a B to B+ in all of your courses, chances are that you will not make it and it’s better to back out early. This may be hard to accept, but working hard for good grades only gets you so far. There are other qualities of an MD that cannot be taught in school.
