AU Honors Application Thread

Good point, but if you look at last year’s RD threads you will see many students who appeared overqualified for AU stats-wise who were denied or wait listed b/c AU thought (and in many cases, rightfully so) that they were using it as a safety. Schools are causing the game to be played much differently these days by trying to better manage yield and weed out those using the school as a safety. This causes a lot of nail biting for those actually using it as a safety, and makes admissions far less predictable.

Just got notification that I advanced to round 2 and the bottom of the email states “If you are admitted to AU, you will receive your admissions decision for the AU Honors Program in your admissions letter.”

Just got the email that I made it to round 2. Congrats to everyone else who’s still in the running, and good luck with all these essays!

Just got my email…didn’t advance, but I’m not terrible surprised, especially considering how big the pool was.

I’m sorry you didn’t advance. Good luck for your admission

I also just got my e-mail saying I’d advanced to the second round for Honors Program, Global Scholars, and Politics, Policy, and Law. Did anyone else apply to any other programs and if so have you heard back? What do you guys think about the essays? I’d love to hear other people’s opinions on acceptance, essays, etc.!

Round 2 for Honors, Global Scholars, and PPL. If anyone is curious, I have a 4.011 weighted high school GPA, 4.0 unweighted college GPA (I am dual-enrolled), and a 34 ACT. Essays were pretty fun.

My D is excited, made the 2nd round! @Blackbelt2b2, you already have your essays done? Impressive. We didn’t realize it would be such a quick turn around time from finding out about the 2nd round to the essay due date! D did see a couple of the prompts that looked interesting, so that helps.

From what I have understood…and it seems reinforced in the essays, American uses these applications and 2nd round essays to place people in other programs if they don’t make it into honors. Does anyone know more than what it on the website about those programs?

@shoboemom‌ I live to work smart, not hard. For example, the PPL essay was to discuss a political issue and solution. I once gave a speech about High Frequency Trading firms, so I recycled (and improved it) as the essay.

I got my email back yesterday, although it’s kinda a pain in the ass that I had to write another 5 essays for the second round (I also got into the second round for Politics/Policy/Law. I did them all yesterday. My stats are very similar to Blackbelt’s (33 ACT, 4.7 weighted gpa). AU is a little more like my safety school; however, if I don’t get into any of the top schools I applied to I am still undecided between AU and Michigan State.

I did enjoy writing the essays though, I knocked them all out in about an hour

I got the email for round 2 as well. I finished the essays in a few hours. not sure how well they came out but I’m not even sure I want to go to AU at this point so I’m not worrying too much.

Can we assume that advancing to round 2 means you will likely be accepted to AU even if not to the honors program?

@engmastiff no. It’s a good sign and means that AU likes you, especially if you were invited to apply. AU Honors and AU admissions do not really communicate with each other. The applications are separate and AU Honors is based off your essays for the most part, while AU admissions is based more off grades and test scores. AU admissions is getting increasingly competitive, so I wouldn’t be so sure about acceptance based off round 2 advancement especially, since the round 1 essay was definitely the most important part of the round.

I was thinking the same thing…that making it to round 2 should be a good sign that you’d be accepted, and I think my D thinks that way too, but I did ask around and heard from one parent whose S was in the 2nd round at another school-not AU- and then ultimately not accepted! So, I guess it can happen. What @PneumaticCow says makes sense, if it is two different offices. I have also heard that AU may be one of those schools that weeds out some high stats kids, thinking they are being used as a safety, and some of those kids might have made it to the 2nd round. AU is currently my D’s top choice. We are anxiously awaiting those notifications!

I received an e-mail stating that I got into the Honors Program. Has anyone else here heard back about it? I’m actually very surprised

I received an email that I was accepted into the Honors Program!! I am surprised decisions came out so early!

Yes, surprised here too! Now anxiously awaiting the FA packet.

Me too! Does being in the Honors Program mean you get the 20K? I’m kind of confused about it.

I got into the AU honors also. Are any of you planning to attend the Honors overnight on the 13th?

I think AU is cool. I made it to the second round, applied, and then was granted January admission, no honors, and mostly loans. So I’m off to Barnard with no loans. It was an experience.
