How good is Auburn University's Architecture Program? It is my in-state school so it is my safety if i don't get into U of Cincinnati or Penn St. Among those lines, does it really matter where I go for undergrad architecture if I plan to get a M.Arch at somewhere more prestigious i.e. (the Ivies). Lastly, how good is Columbia's Arch for undergrad?

I think Auburn is very competitive and highly thought of.

Columbia’s undergraduate architecture program is sort of an ‘architecture lite’. When I was there it was taught at Banard across the street and had nothing to do with the graduate architecture program at Avery Hall. I believe you only do two years of studio work. I would save my pennies for the graduate program.

Our daughter is a freshman in the Foundation Unit of Auburn’s Architecture school. She had no interest in going North because of the cold and felt that Auburn offered her more than just Architecture…college town, school spirit, and as an out-of-state student (also in state) a lot of merit scholarship money.
Saying it is a safety though is not always true and a little confusing in how students are admitted and go through the program. Our daughter found out she was admitted 2 weeks after she applied to Auburn (Oct. 09) for Pre-Architecture, was sent another applications/questionnaire/skill submission in late Feb. because she qualified for Foundation based on SAT, GPA & AP Credits. After submitting that she was not notified until April 26 that she got into Foundation Unit. If she had not gotten in to it…she would have been in the Summer Option which is held the summer after Freshman year. You only qualify for this if you maintain a certain GPA Freshman year and complete certain core classes. Last summer 70 people began and 40 were offered admission into Soph year architecture. Those 40 joined the 20 that finished the Foundation Unit Freshman year.
Google Auburn Rural Studio and you will see the recent press they have received for their Rural Studio program (PBS documentary and exhibition at MOMA).
Good Luck!

Feel free to ask more questions if you want - can send me a private message too. Our daughter did a lot of research. Also, call the Arch. school - they can offer a lot of information. We were shocked thought how late she found out and were on pins and needles. She had other great options, but she really loved Auburn and had scholarship money and Honors College. She is very happy with her choice!

We’re planning a visit to Auburn from the Philadelphia area soon. D is a HS senior and wants Architecture. She is a NMSF and was thinking Penn State til we found out about NM scholarships from Auburn. Anyone have tips for our visit? We’re arriving on a Sunday, with appts set up on Mon for tour, Honors meeting & Arch meeting. On Sunday, thought we’d test out the walking distance from Village dorms to Arch building vs from Quad dorms to Arch building. Any other suggestions for productive ways to spend our time on Sunday?
