My son is currently wait listed at Georgia Tech and won't find out whether he has been accepted until May 15th or after. He was accepted to both of his backup schools, Auburn and Clemson and has to commit to one while he waits to hear from Ga Tech.
If acceptance to Ga Tech doesn't happen, which school would he be better off at for
Mechanical Engineering?

I would say Clemson, but I am a little biased since I go there. They are very similar schools in academics and in campus. I believe Clemson may be ranked a little higher, but don’t quote me on that. I would decide based on finances and how you like the school. I have allot of friends in mechanical who love it. I can try and answer any Clemson specific questions if you have them.

Take a look at this older post as well: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/auburn-university/653721-auburn-vs-clemson.html

Thanks for your response. I know the schools are very similar. He is leaning toward Clemson. I am leaning toward Auburn because of expense. I was a little concerned that there is an interim department chair at Clemson for mechanical engineering and that they are currently trying to fill that position. Any information on that?

I don’t see how having an interim department head is going to affect your son’s education.

let me know if you have any questions about Clemson!

I’m biased again but I absolutely love Clemson. Personally, both schools are at the same level when it comes to engineering so in this case it really comes down to your preference if you don’t end up getting into GT.

Auburn just opened up a brand new Mechanical Engineering complex called the Shelby Center, and the new amenities are amazing. I would be surprised if Auburn doesn’t receive a bump in the rankings in the near future because of it, but even if it doesn’t, many businesses still recognize Auburn’s strong reputation for engineering.

Has your son visited each of these college campuses? As Pierre said, it might be best if he makes his choice based on which school he would enjoy life more at. Personally, I love it here at Auburn – people here are very friendly and laid back (although I’m sure it’s similar at Clemson).

Also, since you mentioned finances, are you an Alabama resident? Auburn is a bargain if you’re paying in-state tuition. Same goes for Clemson if you are a South Carolina resident.
