My son was accepted in Georgia Tech, Clemson, Pitt, Penn State, Miami and Purdue. Obviously, he is interested in engineering. Having a hard time of which school to go to. Any suggestions?

How did those schools get on his list? What does he think are the attractions of each? Needs to make a little spreadsheet and rate the schools in categories that are relevant to him: program, atmospherics, location, cost, etc. How many of the schools has he visited? Time to get on the road?

Congratulations on the many fine acceptances.

Assuming he fits in well with the non-academic aspects of the school, for engineering I'd probably pick Georgia Tech from among that list.

You have a wide span of costs there. Any merit aid from the more expensive schools? That would be a major factor to me, as well as in-state vs out of state costs.

GeorgiaTech for a smaller school (it would be my 1st choice among those listed too coureur), Purdue for larger, no question about it in my mind. Penn State a somewhat distant third...great program but also huge place and consequently takes more effort to get the most out of it.

Clemson is a sleeper on your list. Their National Scholars program, if you get in, is awesome. Clemson is an up and comer - expect their star to rise in the rankings over the next few years (for those who care about such things!)

Ga Tech has great academics but gets mixed reviews otherwise.

To expand a little on what Oldman has said - Ga Tech has a little of the "place where fun goes to die" reputation, plus it is just not a pretty campusy, collegey place - lots of freeway fumes. How certain is he of engineering? Purdue might have more to offer outside of engineering, although if he's certain, Ga Tech, has the best reputation.

Or, as we students called Ga. Tech (7+ years there myself): "The North Avenue Trade School."

have to agree with the above. GT has a reputation as a not great place to spend four years. And though the location is lousy, the Varsity Drive-In is still there, so it's not all bad.

mmmmm. the Varsity. mmmmm.
