i just got my acceptance letter the other day for clemson and now I have to choose between clemson and auburn. I have been to both within the past year and liked both a lot. I got inot engineering at both. I also am doing ROTC and whichever one i choose. What are some pros and cons of each.

Clemson is waay more prestigious.

I personally prefer Auburn.

Go to the one with the better engineering program that you are interested in.

Both are good schools. After making the rounds to several engineering schools with my son the past year including both Auburn and Clemson, the facilities are all very similar. Some schoools are ranked higher than others; however, you will probably use the same textbooks, do similar projects etc. at the schools.

Between Clemson and Auburn:

US News and World Report: Best Undergraduate Engineering Programs ranks them virtually the same.
(I am not sure Clemson is way more prestigious as noted above)

Where did you like the "fit" better. Where would you be happier?

Here in the Southeast Clemson does carry more prestige than Auburn, mostly because of the degree of difficulty in getting into Clemson vs Auburn. However, both campuses share a lot of similarities both in looks and in academics. My friends at Clemson spend a lot of time on Lake Hartwell and camping in the nearby mountains. Clemson is a very small town, smaller than Auburn but it is great if you are outdoorsy. Auburn is in a larger town and has more to do in terms of nightlife. Auburn has a new Wireless Engineering program that is supposedly one of the only programs of it's type in the US. Also, Auburn just opened it's new engineering building so the facilities should be first rate. My impression is that both campuses foster a strong sense of pride in their students because everyone I know who goes to those schools absolutely loves it and they say that it feels like family. I don't hear that about other schools like UGA or Bama. I don't think you can go wrong with either Clemson or Auburn...either way get used to wearing orange and GO TIGERS!!

im also deciding between auburn and clemson! however everyone i talk to tells me i should go to clemson because it is just considered a better school, not that auburn is considered bad, just clemson is considered tougher to get into. I am not going into engineering im going into prevet and i know clemson has a very good program, however auburn offered me a scholarship for doing pre vet there, plus auburn has a vet graduate school and clemson doesnt.. but clemson is still my top choice i think. ya i agree about not feeling the pride and community at UGA i live in ga and i didnt even apply because ive visited and didnt like it too much.. but im excited for either one i choose and im depending on the visits to be the deciding factor!

Christina - Congratulations! I think you should give a hard look to Auburn because their veterinary school is one of the best in the region, better than Clemson. And if they are giving you $$$ on top of that then you have it made! The AU vet school is really hard to get into, and if you look at the website it says that they train the dogs for Dept. of Homeland Security...ahh I would love to be involved in that but I don't want to be a vet!!! If it was a choice for me to go to Clemson without aid and Auburn with aid I would go to Auburn. Things are just too dicey for me right now so I personally wouldn't forgo an offer of $$!!

ok thanks for the advice! ya i think its a 50/50 tie between them right now and the financial aid awards for each school are going to be the deciding factors! (unless i dont get alot from either school in which case ill have to stay in state and go to a small school i got into as a back up =[)

LET ME ALL GIVE YOU SOME ADVICE! I have always loved Auburn and still do. AND i know from experience that it is a WAY cooler place than Clemson. If you have to stay in S. Carolina, try to go to SC because it is way more fun than shi**y Clemson (and Auburn too really). However, Auburn can get prettttty boring too. After football season everyone starts going back home to Birmingham or Decatur or whatever uninteresting town in North Alabama they are from for some good ole’ family time or hunting time or whatever. I am currently a Junior and after spending two years in Auburn, I decided to transfer to the school I originally said no to, UGA. Take it from someone who has seen it all, Athens GA is the place to be. I still say WAR EAGLE on Saturday, but every other day I get to enjoy a much cooler atmosphere and about 100 bars downtown…Don’t regret your college decision, go somewhere FUN and stay there. But seriously Clemson sucks. it isn’t even that prestigious? Last I heard Auburn has the no. 2 engineering school in the entire nation…Never hear much about Clemson and I definitely never hear of anyone having much fun up there. SORRY Clemson people, nothing against you, but ya’ll just aren’t much fun, and everyone knows it’s true

My daughter applied to both. She preferred Auburn because the town is bigger and she just felt like it suited her better. In addition, she was given very generous scholarships at Auburn and only received an out-of-state tuition waiver from Clemson.

I liked both schools, but had concerns regarding how the State of South Carolina budget cuts would affect Clemson over the next four years. I know it drastically reduced the number of merit scholarships they offered last year.

haha agree with proud_mom! auburn is in a much better financial situation, apparently, than clemsom. son is at auburn and haven’t looked back. he will excell at wherever he goes to school but auburn has been awesome!!!

Both schools aren’t very good and don’t carry very much prestige in the business world. If you want to get a good engineering education you should look at Georgia Tech or Illinois. As far as Clemson vs Auburn goes, most SEC schools are lower tier when it comes to academics and are viewed as such. The ACC has a much better academic reputation. All else being equal you should choose Clemson.

Clemson engineering is quite good. They have good faculty because South Carolina supports graduate schools by giving everyone in State tuition at the graduate level, attracting a lot of International students as cheap research labor, which resulted in attracting good faculty.

If you want to do engineering, compare the faculty in both schools in the specific field and ping some of the professors to see which one feels like your school.

As others have said, if you go to Clemson, you become part of a very close knit community since there is nothing else to do within the town. The town size is under 20,000 people but on game day, it balloons upto 100,000.

This thread is pretty old. Surprised that it’s been resurrected. The latest national rank: Clemson – 63, Auburn – 82 (undergraduate rankings)
However … (in reference to engineering and business)
Auburn’s overall graduate engineering program is ranked higher than Clemson – #70 vs. #85 nationally. Auburn has more graduate programs as well (aeronautical, aerospace, etc.), The graduate business school is also ranked higher, #63 nationally. Clemson won’t publicly release the grad business school rankings. (This usually means it’s rather low.) In undergraduate engineering programs, Clemson and Auburn are ranked almost identically.

The question really comes down to how much stock a person puts into the whole ranking phenomenon.

These are both great schools, and both have strong programs. Clemson is especially known for their excellent learning communities for undergraduate students. A student can go to either school and get a great education and find their academic niche. If one fits your needs better than the other, and you can see yourself being a successful and happy student by attending, then go with your gut.

My D was accepted to both schools. She chose Auburn for several reasons…The school is bigger, the town is bigger and the business school offered more. One of the main reasons she chose Auburn was the “feel”. Her friends at Clemson told her there is a subtle “we-they” feeling about SC vs. OOS students. She doesn’t feel that at AU (maybe because its bigger). Many AL students do go home but she has lots of friends who don’t and they frequently plan trips to various places (Lake Martin isn’t that far).

As a parent, I think you should choose the place you will be happiest–all the prestige, etc won’t matter if you aren’t happy. What is important to you in your course of study? My D wanted study abroad and internship abroad–the AU business school has their own programs. Also, ultimately, you want your kid to get a job–the AU alumni network across the nation is way bigger than Clemson.

So folks, who’s going to win the game today, AU or Clemson? Maybe this is why the thread was brought back to life – any predictions? Will Clemson in Death Valley be a tougher team than Miss State? MSU played LSU pretty tough (in a short week) until the 4th quarter, proving they are a force. Can AU’s D-line step it up again this weekend and earn some legitimacy?

BTW: D says that the football game experience has been just amazing! She was sad that this week’s game was away. :(

War Eagle!

Ouch. Auburn def. in super hot water after streak-ending loss. Better luck next week at home.
