Auburn, Tenn, Ole Miss, 'Bama - please tell me what you think of my chances

The schools I'm looking at are Auburn, Tennessee, Ole Miss, South Carolina, Alabama, and Catholic University of America.

So GPA-wise, here's what I've got.. a 2.7... not very good by anyone's standards. Fortunately I go to a pretty prestigeous high school in the suburbs of Columbus, Ohio.

I also take a few difficult classes. I've taken AP US History, AP Gov, and AP English Language and Composition. I've averaged Bs in those courses. I'll also be taking AP Euro and AP Literature next year, so my schedule won't be a cake-walk.

Here are my AP test scores:
*US History: 4
Government: 4
English Lang/Comp: 3
*

*SAT & ACT
SAT: 1200 (Math: 540 Verbal: 660)
ACT: 25
*

Extracurriculars:
Editor on High School Newspaper
Soccer 9-10
Quill & Scroll Member
Volunteer work for a library on Andros Island
I also have work experience at a nearby restaurant

Oh and I'll be graduating in 2007 if that needs clarifying.

Thank you very much for any insight, etc :)

EDIT: oh, uh, apparently I should have posted this in the "what are my chances forum"... didn't see that, I'm pretty new here, sorry. So if someone could move it that would be great.

bump :|...

I think you could do much better, even with a 2.7.

I'm pretty surprised that you think that, tbh. Of those, the three I'm considering most are probably Auburn, Catholic and Ole Miss. Catholic will probably be the most difficult to get into since it's such a small school and it's in DC.

My brother wants me to apply to Penn State for some reason, but I'm more interested in heading south. Besides, I don't think I would be accepted by PSU anyway.

I also might apply to American University as a reach school. I don't know whether it will help at all, but my brother will be attending its law school this fall.

Sorry for this, but i just cant tell...

Are you a guy or a gal? Guys are in demand at AU. I visited it and really liked it, but its not for me. I have around a 3.3 avg., 1190 on the SATs, hardly a top candidate for AU. They seriously are rediculously interested in me for whatever reason (i doubt any beyond gender). I've gotten emails, letters to me and my parents seperately, applications, letters thanking me for visiting, etc., etc. I still dont see the point in applying, because if i dont get into my ED choice, I certainly wont get into American, but still for whatever reason my mom wants me to apply. I'm not but w/e. So maybe if youre a guy this gives you some hope.

I'm a guy. The last time I was at Auburn was a couple of years ago, so I don't remember too much about it. A friend of mine and I are going to make a visit in August just to take things in.

I heard that the dorms there are incredibly s****y, is that true? And just out of curiosity, what about AU makes you think it's not for you?

Dorms where? AU? They were fine. Doesnt matter to me, i'm not going to spend all my time there and im easy to please.

Problems with AU: Huge disparity from girls to guys. Even with the guys there, AU is known for having a large gay (male) population. Not it's a problem, but it'd be nice to hang with guys who are uh..interested in alot of the same stuff as i am. This is the big one: Everyone is pretty into politics. I hate the stuff. Cant stand it, dont believe in it, etc. Call me stupid, but I never thought being in the DC area would propose a problem with that :P
Also, if I do business like I am planing on doing now, Kogod is a good and up and coming school, but I can do MUCH better for less, and even in state.

Lemme just say though, the campus is gorgeous. As is the surrounding area. GREAT place to go to college.

Who would want to go to college nicknamed Ole' Miss. GAHHH.

a 13 year old punka$$ from Massachusetts.

Umm if you're talking about me..i'm not 13 buddy..i'm 15. yeahh k thanks.
Anyway OP...you can get into all those schools pretty much...but maybe you shouldnt just apply to schools in one geographic area. The West coast, northeast, atlantic states have some great schools.

Oh no, by AU I meant Auburn..yeah I forgot that I brought American into the conversation.

I heard that at Auburn the dorms are so awful that most people prefer to live off-campus, which I think would be a bit weird. I don't plan on being in my dorm very much, either, but I guess I'm just interested in knowing whether it has a 'commuter school' feel, which isn't what I'm really going for.

Do me a favor OP, just ignore GDF, he has no idea what he's talking about. You'd be better off with the advice of someone who has a clue...

Umm what is your problem??? I never did anything to you. And there was nothing wrong with my reply. And also, you didnt explain...why did you imply i was 13? lol

You really never know until you apply, but with your GPA I don't think you would get into Tennessee. The class admitted for Fall 2006 was the best class (best GPA's, test scores, etc) in school history. Your test scores are slightly below the median range, but your GPA is what really hurts you. But like I said, you never know. UT is a school that is diverse and seems like they are wanting to bring in more OOS students. So that might help you.

I'm pretty much the same as him give or take, and i doubt i'd have any problems getting into UT.

I think you could get in at ole miss, but I dont think they would give you much financial aid. My friend who just graduated as valedictorian with a 30 on her ACT and a bunch of leadership positions and stuff only got like $9,000

I live in MS and I think you could definitely get into any of these schools (UT might be a reach but not a very big one.) Have you visited these schools? Ole Miss is a very preppy college (haha that sounds stupid, but it is.) As for financial aid I don't think they give it but tuition isn't over $7,000. And nobody gets a free ride unless they're a national merit scholar or have over a 32 on their ACT or 2140 SAT.

I havn't been to Mississippi or Alabama, in fact the only southern schools I've really been to are Auburn and Georgia.

Ha, but everyone I've talked to who knows anything about Ole Miss tells me it's very preppy, just as you have done.. so, I don't really know how to take it. I come from a pretty preppy suburb of Columbus, Ohio so I'm not sure how it can be any worse.

I hear that the greek system is absolutely huge in the south, so the main thing I'm concerned about is getting adjusted to the social scene quick enough so I'm ready for when it's time to rush.

With my stats would Clemson and the College of Charleston be a reach?
