Auburn University or Ohio University

How will someone (female) from the north east fit in at Auburn? I was just accepted off the waitlist for graduate school, and was already accepted at Ohio University. In my field, Ohio University does rank better (46) than Auburn (69), but because the job market is good, rankings really don’t matter. I currently attend Penn State main campus and love it. Honestly, I wish I didn’t have to leave.

So, this is for grad school? Did either offer you any money?

No, no money- my field is super competitive for grad school - most people are lucky to get in somewhere

Although OOS tuition is more at Auburn, the program there is 5 semesters, whereas OU is 6 semesters so money for tuition would be a wash. I just don’t know much about Auburn vs Athens (OU) and I need to make a decision by the weekend because of time constraints on acceptances.

It sounds like it might be a DPT program. Our D, who wants to study PT, is an undergraduate at OU. The campus is beautiful and I believe it was the first PT program in Ohio. If it is PT then I must admit we haven’t gotten to the point that I can give real advice. OU is strong in the Allied Health fields and also has a DO program. OU will have 4 very distinct seasons Auburn less so. Auburn would be nicer in the winter, hotter in the summer. I would be curious where both schools send people for their clinical work. OU has a rather laid back liberal arts vibe to it, though I suspect being a graduate student at either university would feel different than being an undergrad. The closest major city to OU is Columbus which is about an hour away. I wish I could give you more information, though I can answer questions you might have about Athens. Good luck.

Thank you so much for your response. My program is Speech-Language Pathology. I am actually born in Ohio but left for PA when I was only 5. My parents are very familiar with Ohio bc that’s where we originated. However, Auburn just sounds like something different- fresh perspective. My personal issue is that I am not sure the south would be for me. I have had no experience living beyond the midwest or north east, and only vacationed in South Carolina. I am a personal trainer so I know Auburn has a top gym- not sure how OU’s is. I know that is a petty thing- but I’m at the gym a lot

No one in my family has ever been to OU- just friends of my parents who graduated from there. Thank you again for responding. I appreciate it!

Speech Pathology is another strong graduate program for them. Athens is in the Hocking Hills in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. The area itself is rather poor, though the university is gorgeous and is a major part of the area’s economy. If you love the outdoors there is a lot to do in and around Athens. Athens has a good music scene and there is a lot of folk art in the area. Many of the area restaurants are local and much of their food is locally sourced.

The Ping Recreation center is quite impressive and is near Grover Hall which is where I believe you would spend much of your time. https://www.ohio.edu/recreation/facilities/ping/.

Thank you for your insight!
