Auditing a Course Second Semester Senior Year

Hey everyone!

I was hoping you could offer your opinions and experiences on an issue that I have been contemplating for awhile. I've searched past threads, but haven't been able to find the answer to this specific question.

Here's my situation: I'm a second semester senior. I've been admitted Early Decision to my top choice school. It's a top 20 university, one of "CC's Top Universities." If you look through my past threads, you can probably figure out which one it is. I plan to major in Biology or something similar.

I'm taking a pretty heavy course load (well, maybe not heavy to CC standards, but nonetheless...) this year, including AP Calc, AP Stat, and Honors-level Physics. As a second semester senior, I'm looking to lighten my course load a bit, and I'm contemplating auditing my French class. My French class is standard college prep level, not honors or AP, and focuses on French culture more than the language. I'm not looking to go into French in the future.

By auditing, I would attend class every day, but would not be given a grade or credit hours (which isn't an issue for me-- I have more than enough credits to graduate.) I would not be required to take tests or quizzes.

Here is my question: ** Will auditing French raise a red flag with admissions? Will it aggravate them? Will they see my auditing as comparable to dropping the class? As long as I keep up my GPA (or at least keep it in the B+ and above range,) will I be at risk for having my admission withdrawn? **

Thanks for your input!

You are essentially not taking a class that you indicated on your application that you were taking, so it seems possible that it could affect your ED acceptance, which was partially based on what you stated was your sr schedule. Just attending the class every day seems a far cry from taking it and getting an A or B grade. And the fact that you don’t plan to study French any further is irrelevant. It’s just me, and I don’t have direct knowledge of when colleges withdraw acceptances, but I wouldn’t advise my kid to take this route.
