Is it possible to audit classes which you arent signed up for? i want to take the chinese language course, but when i took the placement test, they put me in a level that i felt was too high for me (level 2). I wanted to attend the lower level class (level 1), but they wouldnt let me. so im asking if its possible that i can just go to the lectures for level 1 just to listen and stuff. thanks.

p.s. can u just attend any lectures without registering? do the professors take roll or anything?

Chinese is a pretty small class, with about 40 students, and depending on the classroom, sometimes there aren’t extra seats. But if there are extra seats, I don’t think it would be much of a problem. In the beginning the professor probably wouldn’t even notice, but towards the end of the year, my professor knew many of the student’s names.

Plus you can try level two and if it’s too difficult then you can talk to the department again. I’ve heard of people in Chin10 AM mandarin background class moving to chin10 AD dialect background class after a quarter because it moved at too fast of a pace for them.

thanks, so if the class is too hard for me, all i do is talk with the department and have them switch me to the lower level? is it gonna be that easy or do i need to really convince them

I’m not sure how easy it is, you would probably need some sort of proof, bombing the tests or some sort. I’m not even sure if you can move down a level, i just know you can move down the 3 different tracks. But the department is nice, and if you have problems, i’m sure they will be glad to help.
But if they tested you into level 2, you must have some good basic handle of the language right?
Because level one really doesn’t cover much but basic conversations and grammar structures.
