Hello! I visited BSU over the summer and totally fell in love with the campus and the MT program. I would appreciate any advice on what to wear at my audition and how to prepare for the dance portion, as dancing is not my strongest attribute. BSU is my first choice.
Hello @UCGrad87, glad you are excited about BSU! Are you male or female? I can’t speak to a specific audition outfit - it is generally advised to wear something you are comfortable in, but someone else may be able to weigh in with gender-specific advice.
As to the dance portion of the audition, the best advice I can give is to smile, have fun, and keep going even if you mess up! Don’t let mistakes or missteps psych you out. Show your personality always. If admitted, you would be placed in whatever class level is right for you. I believe they want to see potential; don’t worry if it’s not perfection! It’s a great program that would start wherever you are and help you grow from there.
My D is currently a freshman MTO. She said that BSU was, by far, her best audition. Mostly because it didn’t feel like an audition. She said that she was put at ease right away and everyone in the room responded to her. They laughed in the right places and seemed to genuinely enjoy her performance. They also asked her questions about her personally. She had had other college auditions where absolutely nothing was said and there was no reaction. She also dressed as herself. She is tiny (5’) and is not comfortable in heels so she wore white target “keds”, a fun, colorful bubble skirt and a white shirt. I think dressing according to your personality helps you feel like you. Ultimately, that is what the auditors want to see. What will stand out is your personality and quirks…that’s a good thing! Makes you memorable! Feel free to reach out to me for any other questions! I’ll be happy to help any way that I can! Break a leg this season!
Hello @UCGrad87! I am a senior musical theatre major at BSU and I also work at the front desk in our main office! What we recommend for students to wear during our dance audition is anything you feel comfortable in, but that also allows our dance instructors to see the lines of the body (i.e. no baggy tee shirts, baggy gym shorts, etc.) During our on-campus auditions, auditionees will execute a ballet barre exercise, as well as an across the floor jazz combination. There is also an optional tap audition if you feel comfortable with your tapping abilities. At our Unified auditions, due to space and time restraints, auditionees will normally just perform a jazz combination.
As was stated above, our professors are looking for potential! Remember to have fun, keep smiling and try your best! Our program is competitive, but we are looking for well-rounded performers, so your dancing abilities will not make or break your audition!
If you have any other questions, please let me know!
